Borg in French semis
PARIS-Sweden's Bjorn Borg and Italy's Corrado Barazzutti swept
into the semifinals of the $400,000 French Open clay court tennis tournament
yesterday with straight set victories.
Borg, No. 1 seed, rolled over Mexico's Raul Ramirez 63, 6-3, 6-0, to move
closer to his third French Open crown.
Barazzutti, the fiery No. 1 player of Italy, whipped tough Eddie Dibbs of
Miami Beach, Fla., 6-2, 7-6, 6-1 and will next face the 22-year-old Borg Satur-
day in the semifinals.
The Barazzutti-Dibbs match, one of the best of the 11 days of competition
here at Roland Garros Stadium, was climaxed by a tense tie-breaker game
in the second set. Dibbs had four set-points against the 25-year-old Italian,
but Barazzutti staved them all off and went on to take the tiebreaker 11 poin-
ts to nine.
Dick Stockon of Dallas and defending champion Guillermo Vilas of
Argentina meet in Saturday's other semifinal match toward the $48,000
men's title.
Pacers deal No. 1 pick
INDIANAPOLIS-The Indiana Pacers, unable to get George McGinnis
from Philadelphia or the assurance that All-American Larry Bird would
pass up his final year in college, traded their No. 1 pick in the National
Basketball Association draft for guard Johnny Davis of the Portland Trail
Blazers yesterday.
The surprising deal also gave the Pacers the Blazers' No. 3 pick in the
first round of today's draft of college players.
The Pacers, who also announced the signing of free agent Alex English,
a 6-foot-2 forward with the Milwaukee Bucks, still could trade the No. 3
choice for another veteran before the draft.
Or, they could use that pick for one of the top available college
players-possibly Phil Ford of North Carolina, Mychal Thompson of Min-
nesota or Rick Robey of NCAA champion Kentucky.
Norton defends today
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Officials kept World Boxing Council heavyweight
champion Ken Norton and challenger Larry Holmes apart by 30 minutes
yesterday when they weighed in for their title match.
The two had a violent confrontation during training and the Nevada
Athletic Commission wanted no repeat.
The champion, who was given his crown by the WBC when Leon Spinks
refused to fight him, said, "This is just what I wanted to weigh. I was too.
light at 214%14 when I fought Jimmy Young."
The title fight will be televised by ABC at 8 p.m. with a viewing audience
of 40 million expected.
Norton goes into this fight with a 40-4 record and twice has lost in title
bouts. George Foreman knocked him out in two rounds at Caracas and
Muhammad Ali won a disputed decision in New York. Holmes is 27-0.
