Summer employment aplenty
for students willing to move

By SUE WARNER
The job market was good
last year, sod I'd say it's even
better this year,' Ms. Ann Coop-
er, University summer place-
ment coordinator said yester-
day.
According to Cooper, "'73, '74,
and '75 were pretty rough," as
far as finding summer employ-
ment for University students.
However, she reported that this
year her office has received a
significantly higher number of
employer requests for summer
help.
"NOT EVERYBODY gets ex-

actly what they want," Cooper
cautions, "but they'll get jobs
if they're willing to go where
the jobs are."
Cooper said jobs in engineer-
ing, landscaping and in indus-
trial fields such as metallurgy
are plentiful. Openings are also
available in more traditional
summer jobs for college stu-
dents such as camp jobs, parks
and recreation, unskilled labor
and clerical work.
Although the better paying
jobs are being offered to gradu-
ating seniors and graduate stu-
dents, Cooper said that business

and industry are also interested
in upperclass students who meet
educational requirements and
have enough experience in cer-
tain fields. "At the end of their
junior year, students are ready
for some decent jobs," she said.
THE SUMMER placement of-
fice estimated that students who
get jobs through the office will
make salaries ranging from a
low of $100/month to $1000/
month and more for certain
science and engineering jobs.
Each March Cooper begins
the search for summer jobs by
mailing personnel request forms
to employers all over Michigan
and the United States. However,
most employers do not send a
reply to the summer placement
office until the end of April, May
or even as late as June. Cooper
explains that this delay occurs
because employers simply do
not know what positions, if any,
they will have available for the
summer until then. Consequent-
ly, the majority of students have
left campus when Cooper learns
of openings and she must then
get in touch with them at their
summer addresses.
Cooper said that it is not too
late to register with the office
for this summer but she warns
that almost all of the jobs avail-
able through the summer place-
ment office would involve a
move from this area. "If they're
stuck in Detroit or Ann Arbor,
I can't help them," she added.

WASHINGTON (P)-The chair-
man of a House subcommittee,
maintaining Richard M. Nixon
can talk to Congress if he can
talk on television, is threaten-
ing to subpoena the former pres-
ident to explain his pledge of
postwar aid to North Vietnam.
Rep. Lester Wolff (D-N.Y.),
chairman of the Asian and
Pacific affairs subcommittee,
raised the possibility of a sub-
poena Monday after his panel
heard testimony on recently be-
gun talks aimed at normalizing
relations between the United

States and Vietnam.
Earlier, Richard Holbrooke,
assistant secretary of state for
Asian affairs, said he favored
making public a Feb. 1, 1973
letter in which Nixon offered
North Vietnam $3.2 billion in
postwar aid..
Wolff told reporters that Nix-
on -has refused to answer re-
quests that he authenticate the
letter and answer questions
about its contents.
"If he (Nixon) can talk to the
television guys," the congress-
man said, "he can talk to Con-
gress, don't you think?"
