to check out his rapport with
the kids: "Wow," he gasped,
"you cats really have a nice
place here!" Ten tumultuous
seconds later he noted "it
sounds like summertime" before
beginning his next song.
As for the audience, it col-
lectively floated amidst images
of lollipops and kindergarten,
anticipating the music like can-
dies on a birthday cake. And
like a bunch of five-year olds,
they couldn't sit still as they
stomped, clapped and tripped on
Sebastian's good-time tunes.
John was ready for them. He
rolled off his old Lovin' Spoon-
ful favorites, filling the air with
his distinctive boppin Nashville
funkiness. His performance must
have been typical for him. After
all, most of the ground work on
these tunes was accomplished
years before.
But nobody really cared about
Sebastian's versatility as a per-

former because everyone knew
what was expected, and John
Sebastian is the last person in
the world to let his fans down.
In fact, he only dared try some
new things toward the end,
when he was positive the kids
were in his pocket and because
he knew he'd return to the Lovin *
Spoonful groove for his encores.
It was a concert of memories,
and like most memories, it was
mellow.
