CARBONDALE - The Minne-
sota Gophers advanced to the
NCAA Woryld Series in Omaha
June 8-14 with a delayed victory
over favorite Southern Illinois
to capture the District Four
Championship by a 7-6 count.
The two squads played to a
6-6 tie after 11 innings Satur-
day when rain forced the delay
of the game. Play was resumed
from that point Sunday 'and the
Golden Gophers took the game
in 14 innings, twice the duration
of a normal college ball game.
With Minnesota hurler Dennis
Allar on third, Joe Comer smack-
ed a ground shot to Saluki short-
stop Stan Mann. Mann whipped
the ball to home in an effort to
cut down the streaking Allar, but
the crafty Minnesota pitcher
leaped over the tag of catcher
Larry Calufetti and knocked the
ball from his mitt to clinch the
championship for the Gophers.
IN THE EARLIER, going,
Minnesota rode third sacker
Tim Grice's grand slam home
run in the fifth inning to take a
6-3 lead only to have the Salukis
rally back to tie the score in the
eighth on a three run homer by
outfielder Ken Kral.
Grice easily walked away with
the tournament's most valuable
player award. Besides his bases-
loaded shot, the Gopher third
baseman also drove in three
other runs in the tourney.
In addition to Grice; pitcher
DaveWinfield, catcher Tom Bu-
ettner, and first haseman Chris
Brown joined their Gopher team-
mate on the all-tournament team.

Carlos Monzan, who just barely retained his middleweight title
Saturday night, rocks challenger Emile Griffin. After the fight the
plucky Argentinian indicated that he was extremely disappointed
with his performance and may just hang up his gloves at the ripe
old age of 31. If he does retire, Jean Claude Bouttier would be the
number claimant to the vacant throne. Griffinr announced that he
was going to take one more shot at a sixth world championship.
