Pepi quits
Joe Pepitone, the subject of
Sports of the Daily's "Do You
Know This One?" provided what
could be the answer ot the query
why was he traded. Joe hung up
the old spikes Saturday and ex-
pressed more than mild dis-
pleasure at the trade which sent
him to Atlanta. Joe's retirement
is the second time in two years
he has called it quits. "I work-
ed my tail off and this is what I
get," Pepi said. "If they (the
Cubs) did it last year, I'd have
understood."

Eight Star Wolverines
CHICAGO - The Big Ten baseball All-Star Team has been
selected and two Michigan men made the first team honor
roll. Left Fielder Tom Kittinger and pitcher Art "Ace" Adams
made the first squad, third baseman Bill Meyer was tabbed
to the second and the third squad was populated with three
Wolverines: shortstop Mark Crane, catcher John Lonchar and
pitcher Chuck Rogers. Honorable mention went to first sacker
Pat Sullivan and pitcher Pete lelt.
Absent DH
No DH was named to any squad in the poll of Big Ten
coaches, even though the loop used the controversial new role,
partially as a result of the lack of a proper blank on the
ballot for the position. Though there has been no official ex-
planation for the oversight, the most logical conclusion to draw
is that not one man consistently handled the job for a Big Ten
squad. The only exception to that rule was the man who de-
served the honor - Michigan Jim Kocoloski. Jim finished the
Big Ten season with a .418 batting average, fifth best in the
loop.
Walker dead at 39
There was sad news for the Michigan athletic community this
Memorial Day weekend. 1954 All-American Art Walker drowned
while scuba diving in Lake Superior. After his college. career
ended, the tackle took his skills to Canada where he played for
the Edmonton Eskimoes from 1955 to 1962.
Walker, 39, received a doctorate in counselling and was
a counseling psychologist and professor of education at Northern
Michigan at the time of his death. At-Northern, he was chairman
of the Human Rights Commission and in charge of Northern's
Black Studies Program.
Ind y notes
A. J.Foyt was among three drivers fined $100 in Monday's
Inly 500 crack-up for improving his position. Peter Revson and
Steve Krisloff also got hit for the 100 smackers . . . "Salt" Wal-
ther, the injured driver remains in serious condition.
On tab...
The Indy drivers will make another valiant try to com-
plete the entire 500 miles. Ten AM is the hopeful launching
date . . . The Tigers will storm into battle against the
rampaging Chicago White Sox. Stan Bahnsen and Jim
Perry will lock horns in the 9:00 p.m. baffle.
