Joe hung up the old spikes Saturday and ex- pressed more than mild dis- pleasure at the trade which sent him to Atlanta. Joe's retirement is the second time in two years he has called it quits. Left Fielder Tom Kittinger and pitcher Art "Ace" Adams made the first squad, third baseman Bill Meyer was tabbed to the second and the third squad was populated with three Wolverines: shortstop Mark Crane, catcher John Lonchar and pitcher Chuck Rogers. Honorable mention went to first sacker Pat Sullivan and pitcher Pete lelt. Absent DH No DH was named to any squad in the poll of Big Ten coaches, even though the loop used the controversial new role, partially as a result of the lack of a proper blank on the ballot for the position. Though there has been no official ex- planation for the oversight, the most logical conclusion to draw is that not one man consistently handled the job for a Big Ten squad. The only exception to that rule was the man who de- served the honor - Michigan Jim Kocoloski. Jim finished the Big Ten season with a .418 batting average, fifth best in the loop.
