NEW YORK (P) - Abortion has become the
most frequently performed legal surgical pro-
cedure after tonsillectomy, according to a study
of the effects of the Supreme Court decision on
abotrion.
In 1972, the year before the high court struck
down state laws that restricted the operation,
there were 600,000 reported legal abortions.
In 1973, there were at least 750,000 legal
abortions in the United States and an estimated
900,000 in 1974, according to the findings pub-
lished in Family Planning Perspectives, a tech-
nical journal of the Alan Guttmacher Institute.
The Institute is a division of the Planned Par-
enthood Federation of America.
Christopher Tietze, principal investigator in
the study, said the survey illustrated " the
importance of the Supreme Court's decisions
in enabling thousands of women to obtain safe,
legal abortions." The study's other findings in-
cluded:
- Public hospitals have been slowest to re-
spond to the court's decision. Only 17 per cent

of public hospitals reported performing any
abortions in the first quarter of 1974, in con-
trast to 28 per cent of comparable non-Catholic,
voluntary and private hospitals. As a result,
abortions are less often available to low-income
women who have the most unwanted pregnan-
cies:
*More than 90 per cent of the increase in
legal abortions between the first quarter of 1973
and the same period in 1974 occurred in non-
hospital clinics;
*The places that perform abortions are now
more evenly distributed around the country, al-
though New York and California, with one-fifth
of the nation's women, accounted for two-fifths
of all abortions; and
*Abortions were highest in the mid-Atlantic
and Pacific states with respective rates of 31.5
and 28.4 legal abortions per 1,000 women of re-
productive age. In the east south central states
and the west south central states, the raes were
3.9 and 4.6 per 1,000, respecively.

The gravesite was vandalized "You must realize that you're
earlier this year and the bust dealing with a genius of ge-
smashed to pieces. Bigelow says niuses who was an expert at
this would not affect access to baffling the world."
