A Woman Under the Influence
-(Cinema II, Angell Aud. A, 7,
9:45) - John Cassavetes' sear-
ing, merciless study of non-
communicative marriage, with
Gena Rowlands and Peter Falk
working the director's improvi-
sational technique to an almost
unbearable intensity. Rowlands
is simply spectacular, deserving
of every award on record in-
cluding the Oscar she didn't
win. **
Animal Crackers - (Mediat-
rics, Nat. Sci. Aud., 7, 8:45,
10:30) - The Marx Brothers'
longest early film, and some-
what strained in comparison to
their other efforts of the period.
However, even B- Groucho, Chi-
co & Harpo is worth 50 hours
of Monty Python, and, as such,
not to be missed.
A Taste of Honey - (Cinema
Guild, Arch. And., 7, 9:05) -
Tony Richardson drama of a:
lonely, pregnant teenager grow-
ing up in working class London.
Solidly done, but a rather icy
style leaves the viewer less in-
volved than erpected. *
Serpico (Matrix, 7, 9) - Al
Pacino's finest performance to
date as the New York cop fight-
ing literally alone to expose the
entrenched corruption of nearly
.all of his co-workers. A wrench-
ing drama beautifully directed
by Sidney Lumet, but they're
showing the film to death
around here. ****

Paper Chase - (New World,
MLB, 3, 7, 9) - Chronicle of a
Harvard law student's first year
makes a pleasant but not very
dramatic film. Notable for John
Houseman's Oscar-winning film
debut as a brilliant, impersonal
law prof, but little else that's
memorable. It has evolved into
one of the latest campus "cult"
films, though, so you might end

up enjoying it. **
The Great Dictator - (Me-
diatrics, Nat. Sci. Aud., 7, 9:15)
-Chaplin's 1940 satire on Hitler
is a maddening combination of
high comedy and low pathos,
neither mixing with the other.
The tragic interludes are jar-
ringly out of kilter with the rest
of the film and the impassioned
"liberation" speech at the end
is still an embarrassment, but
the comic passages remain so
inspired that they redeem all
the rest. ***
Ali - Fear Eats the Soul -

Guidening
(Cinema Guild, Arch. Aud., 7, (Cinema Guild, Arch. Aud., 7 vent
9:05) - Recent German film only) - Eisenstein's epic on the eling
about an affair between a 30-ish Russian tyrant, characterized nota
Moroccan and a 60-ish German by a kind of grand opera style for
woman, with the combined ra- that takes the American viewer invo
cial and age prejudices result- a little getting used to. More Sydo
ing. Notable as a first-class film comprehensible when shown in Thul

The White Zombie and Freaks
-(Matrix, complete shows at 7
& 9) - Freaks was banned in
the U.S. for decades following
its release in 1932, although in
retrospect it's hard to under-
stand why. Tod Borwning's film
involving carnival freaks and a
beautiful, haughty ballet dancer
is reasonably gruesome, but
stands out as much for its strong
story line as for any garishness
involved. The White Zombie is
a silent horror film starring
Bela Lugosi, and is purported
to be one of his better efforts -
which may not be saying
much. ***
