AFTER TEN YEAR BAN:
At last, the Dunk is back

By K kTHY HENNEGHAN
The Dunk is back.
With the leapers on the Michi-
gan team this year, it should be
exciting.
"The crowd will go wild,"
says Michigan coach Johnny
Orr. "In Indiana or Iowa, they
might even jump out of the bal-
conv for something like that."
The National Basketball
Rules Committee, which gov-
erns all amateur basketball in
the United States and Cana-
da, voted last spring to allow

dunking during games this
season. The practice had
been outlawed for a decade.
Dunking will be permitted
during a game but will be for-
bidden in warmups before the
game and at intermission under
penalty of a technical foul.
The committee had outlawed
dunking before the 1966-67 sea-
son in a controversial vote.
Players are generally excited
about the change, but Orr fore
sees one disadvantage -- "One
thing that really makes me

mad," he says, "is that when
they go up to dunk they some-
times miss instead of just lay-
ing it in."
Wolverine guard Rickey
Green concedes that on the
fast break, chances are he'll
go for the dunk. "If I'm all
alone and I'm not too tired to
jump up there," says Green,
"I think I'll try to throw it
through.
Without a doubt, Michigan's
most spectacular dunkers are
forwards Joel (rhymes with
Noel) Thompson and Alan Har-
dy.
"Joel was good in Egypt (on
a goodwill tour) when he could
dunk," says Orr. "And Alan
Hardy, I think that's the only
way he shoots layups nowa-
days."
In other rule changes, techni-
cal fouls charged to the coach
will cost two free throws. Only
one free throw was awarded
last season.
The rules committee also ap-
proved a program 10 crackdown.
in three areas: holding viola-
tions, eliminating delay of game
prior to free throws and throw-
ins, and acting fouls (called
when a player falls to the floor
attempting to draw a charge.)
