CONNORS, BORG MEET IN FINALS:

!G f I Z 1 7

Clay
By The Associated Press
FOREST HILLS, N. Y. -
Chris Evert solidified her po-
sition on the throne of women's
tennis yesterday by crushing
Evonne Goolagong 6-3, 6-0 in
the final of the U. S. Open
Championships. Evert has won
over 100 straight matches on
clay courts.
Earlier,Jimmy Connors re-
gained his image as a court
killer and Sweden's Bjorn
Borg drained the last bit of
fire out of temperamental
Ilie Nastase to gain the final
round in the men's division.

Evonne

The aggressive American
from Belleville, Ill., and the'
methodical 20-year-old from
Stockholm will meet at the
West Side Tennis Club today,
for the $30,000 first prize.
Evert's surprisingly one-sid-
ed victory, following triumphs
over her Australian opponent in
the 1975 Open here as well as
Wimbledon, hoisted her into the
pinnacle once shared by such
tennis greats as Helen Wills
Moody, Maureen Connelly and
Billie Jean King.
The women's match, last of
T cfr iic

a straight - set series in the
center court, was played be-
fore another capacity crowd
of 16,244. Unlike their pre-
vious meetings here and at
Wimbledon, the Evert - Goola-
gong rerun was quick and
merciful.j
The graceful Australian, with
rare natural talent and a rich
repetoire of shots, was no
match for the icy, computer-
like stroke - making Miss Evert
from Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
After a shaky start, in which
she lost two straight games and
won only one point, Chris ral-
lied to take 10 games in a row
in the 55-minute match. While

she played well, Miss Goola-
gong practically donated her
points with loose, effortless
play.
Connors played perhaps the
finest tennis of his career in
smashing Guillermo Vilas of
Argentina 6-4, 6-2, 6-1.
Jumping, sliding and scooting
around the court, he was like a
prize fighter trying to bring his
opponent to the canvas. Not
once did he temporize. He nev-
er let the South American up
for air.
There was no letup in his at-
tack. He just kept hitting
away with sledge hammer
blows off of both wings. Vilas

was constantly on the defen-
sive.
Asked later why he was nev-
er able to get into the match,
Vilas responded: "When a man
hits a ball at you at 200 miles
per hour, you can not hit it
back at 400 miles per hour. He
was too good."
Borg, young, strong and
quick, was equally impressive
against Nastase, rated by his
peers as the finest shotmaker
in the sport.
Nastase's talent, however,
seemed to subside with his dis-
position. Obviously, he plays
better when he is mad.
Nastase started the match
with a service break in the
first game but was quickly re-
broken and before he knew it, he
was behind 1-4. The same pat-
tern was followed in the next
two sets.
