Rhodes inaugurated at Cornell

against a budget plan for the 1979-80
academic year and a shift in emphasis
for student assistance supported by
Rhodes.r
If Cornell's trustees approve the ad-
ministration's budget statement in
December, the tuition will increase by
ten per cent for students in the endowed
schools and by seven per cent for those
in the state supported schools. The
statement, signed only by David
Knapp, Cornell's Provost, would not
raise financial aid by more than ten per
cent.
THE NEW Presient has endorsed a
shift in money from students who have
shown need to those who have
academik merit, reported the Daily
Sun.
In a text released in Ann Arbor before
Fleming left for Ithaca, the ninth
University President gave
Rhodes-coincidentally Cornell's ninth
President--two pieces of advice: "The
first is that the handiest tool of a
president is always the history of his
university, which should always be kept
close to his desk," and that "we will
succeed only insofar as we can work

Security was fairly heavy at the
ceremony to formally inaugurate
Rhodes, who was the acting President
at Cornell over the summer. The Daily
Sun reported that about 25 Safety
Division officers watched students en-
ter the hall and stood guard outside.

ONE REASON for the security was
that James Perkins, a former Cornell
President, joined the Ivy League
presidents and trustees invited to the
event. Perkins was forced to resign in
1969 after he granted campus immunity
for students who had taken over carm-
pus building brandishing machine
guns.
