TOURNAMENT BID FALLS SHORT

Gophers

1

By DAVE WIHAK
The Michigan Hockey team's
valiant attempt to win an NCAA
championship berth came to an
abrupt end Sunday when they
were defeated by the Minne-
sota Gophers, 5-2, in the final
round of WCHA playoffs.
The Wolverines tied the de-
fending national champion Go-
phers 3-3 in the first game of
the two game total goal series,
but fell just one victory shy of
a trip to the Nationals at St.
Louis.
MICHIGAN ENTERED the
WCHA playoffs with a hot hand
on the strength of two league
victories over Michigan State,
beating the Spartans in Ann
Arbor 11-8, and turning the
same trick back in Lansing by
a 7-5 score. The first game in-
cluded a four goal performance
by Dave Debol, while the second
saw the Wolverines come from
a 5-1 deficit to sew up the win.
Thus the Wolverines flew out
to Colorado College to play the
third place Tigers in the open-
ing- round. During the regular
season both teams split, the
home team coming out on top
each game.

Top-ranked Iowa survived a
slew of final round upsets, piling
up enough points in the pre-
liminary rounds to leave second-
place Wisconsin well behind,
118/-851/2. Michigan State edged
Michigan for third, 72%-70.
Michigan had a shot at third
going into the meet's final
match but Spartan heavyweight
Larry Avery won his champion-
ship bout, handing MSU their
go-ahead points.
Senior Jim Brown took the
only Michigan championship,
outclassing all contenders at
118. Brad McCrory placed sec-
ond at 134, losing only to the
man to beat him in Big Ten
duals, Indiana's Sam Komar.

Heavyweight Mitch Marsicano
and 158-pounder Dan Brink
posted thirds for the Wolverines.
Mark Johnson was the only
other Michigan grappler to
place, taking fourth at 167.
