TOURNAMENT BID FALLS SHORT Gophers 1 By DAVE WIHAK The Michigan Hockey team's valiant attempt to win an NCAA championship berth came to an abrupt end Sunday when they were defeated by the Minne- sota Gophers, 5-2, in the final round of WCHA playoffs. The Wolverines tied the de- fending national champion Go- phers 3-3 in the first game of the two game total goal series, but fell just one victory shy of a trip to the Nationals at St. Louis. MICHIGAN ENTERED the WCHA playoffs with a hot hand on the strength of two league victories over Michigan State, beating the Spartans in Ann Arbor 11-8, and turning the same trick back in Lansing by a 7-5 score. The first game in- cluded a four goal performance by Dave Debol, while the second saw the Wolverines come from a 5-1 deficit to sew up the win. Thus the Wolverines flew out to Colorado College to play the third place Tigers in the open- ing- round. During the regular season both teams split, the home team coming out on top each game.
