WASHINGTON (0) - Deathst
and paralysis have resulted
among many of the 10,000 pa-t
tients treated with a drug de-e
scribed as 'purified meat ten-t
derizer', a Senate panel probing3
the Food and Drug Administra-i
tion was told yesterday.
An orthopedic surgeon testi-1
fied that FDA approval for
widespread use ofthe experi-
mental drug Discase, injected
into the back to dissolve rup-
tured spinal discs, would be "a
disaster."
Another surgeon said it would
be "idiotic" for the FDA to
approve the drug in the fare of
questions about its safety and
efficacy and recommenda-ions
against approval by an FDA
medical officer and outside
scientists.
BUT FDA Commissioner Alex-
ander Schmidt, appearing for
the second time before the Sen-
ate health subcommittee to an-
swer employes charges of har-
assment, called accusations
against his agency "absolu:ely
false and irresponsible."
Although there may be in-t
stances in which establisned
procedures were violated, hei
said, so far no proof has beenI
shown that there is a pattern
of FDA favoritism for the drug1
industry.1
Schmidt said he had not re-
viewed all the complaints by at
least 10 of the FDA's 108 medi-
cal officers who investigate new
drmg applications. But he den-,
ied investigators are trans~'er-
red if they oppose marketing of
new drugs, that advisory com-
mittee records are destroyed or
that the agency is dominated by
the drug industry.
"I find it incredible that any-
one familiar with FDA activi-
ties in the drug field uring the
past few years could conceiv-
ably come to the conclusion that
the regulated industry has an
undue influence on much less
controls, this agency,' the cor-
missioner said.

before the fast of Yom Kippur,
the holiest of Jewish holidays.
The raids were reported in
Tel Aviv as designed to break
up any attack the Palestinians
may be planning for the holi-
day and first anniversary of
the outbreak of the 1973 war in
the Mideast.
No one was reported killed
by the raids on either day. Only
one man was reported injured,
a corporal wounded on Tues-
day and his injuries were said
to be slight.
A military spokesman in Tel
Aviv was quoted as saying that
the planes struck to "keep the
terrorists busy" over Yom Kip-
pur the Jewish Day of Atone-
ment. A year ago, during the
20th hour of the solemn holiday,
Egypt and Syria attacked in the
Sinai and the Golan Heights and
launched the fourth Arab - Is-
raeli war in 25 years.
Lebanese witnesses reported
plantations were destroyed and
wood set ablaze when a for-
mation of six jet fighters swept
low over El-Ghor a village area
close to the border with Israel.
The raid lasted 10 minutes.

NEW YORK () - A pheno-
menon central to the study of
galaxies millions of lights years
away is being used for the first
time to examine the flow of
blood in the retina of the human
eye and could have a major
effect on research on a host of
ills.
The unusual work with the
eye is described as a major new
field of eye research that could
affect diseases of the retina and
even other ills, such as heart
disease and diabetes.
This technique involves shin-
ing a weak laser beam into the
eye and detecting the change
in frequency produced when
the highly condensed beam hits
the moving particles in the
blood.
Measurement of this effect,
the Doppler effect, provides in-
formation on blood flow speed
and circulation time in the hu-
man retina. The Doppler effect
is caused by motion relative to
the observer, and produces the
different sounds of, say a train
as it approaches and leaves a
station.
