THE CHRISTMAS ROUTINE
It's last year again this year

By ROSE SUE BERSTEIN
Christmas vacation, you think.
Ah, the luxury of it all. Days
and days of reading, relaxing,
resting.
But you remember last year at
this time. What happened? You
were going to read The Magic
Mountain and War and Peace
and Ulysses.
And, catch up on the latest
flicks.
And play scrabble and drink
cointreau with mother, for bet-
ter communication of course.
Not to mention, doing all the
routine shopping you never got

Oh the hours of painting and
listening to music and just be-
ing. Spontaning.
But last year at Christmas-
time none of these things hap-
pened.
Instead there were fights,
frustrations, fantasies.
Fights with parents a b o u t
school, grades, moving out of the
dorm, staying in Ann Arbor next
summer.
The frustration of meeting
old friends, changed persons or
changed perceptions of them ...
it just didn't connect, you could
not relate. Nothing is real any-
more.
And fantasy. Fantasy of think-
ing that beyond the holiday glit-
ter and fuss there was compas-
sion, and will and spirit t h at
someday things will be chang-
ed.

Last year there was the war
and poverty and racism and sex-
ism.. and hypocrisy in Christ-
mas.
And it all hid beneath New
Yorker advertising. All t h e
year-long fashionable radical
liberals forgot themselves during
the season of good cheer and
other such rot.
After all who gives a hang
about poverty amid the plush-
ness of an urban Christmas.
Look at the stores. Look at the
high school newspapers and the
small town good will sheets-
they all rail against "the mater-
ialism that besets us all at
Christmastime."
Big deal. Why is this Christ-
mas different from any other
Christmas? What makes you
think the world can change now?
