Nixon names chicano
for US. treasury nomi

WASHINGTON (P) - President,

,

Nixon followed tradition of re-
cent years yesterday and named
another woman to be the treasur-
er of the United States - and
he appealed to a minority group
by picking a Mexican - American
for the job.
She is Romana Banuelos, a self-
made businesswoman, who worked
her way up from operating a tor-
tilla stand to become chairman of
the board of a California bank.
Banuelos said yesterday that
hers was no easy road to success
and anyone who wants to follow
her path would have to be "will-
ing to suffer and put up with in-
conveniences."

ly with the Regents Interim
Rules, until the new UC rules are
revised and approved by SGC,
Senate Assembly and the Regents.
Last week, Law School Dean and
former UC Chairman Theodore
St. Antoine indicated the UC
rules would not be ready for a
few months, due to a large turn-
over in membership the summer
and the need for the group to "get
acclimated."

When the Senate approves her,
for the $36,000-a-year post to re-
place the late Dorothy Andrews
Kabis of Delaware, Banuelos, her
husband and 16-year-old daugh-
ter will move to Washington. Two '
sons will carry on the Ramona
Mexican Food Products firm she
started in 1949 and which now:
employes over 300 people, selling
25 Mexican food products nation-
wide and operating out of Gar-{
dena, Calif. She prepared the re- '
cipes herself and trained the
cooks.
After President Nixon announc-
ed her appointment and greeted
her in the Oval Office at the
White House, Banuelos told of her
early struggles.
Her husband, Alexander, also
from Mexico, joined the businessI
after she had been at it for seven
years, and is now secretary-treas-
urer of the' firm.

!Further, the interns and resi-
dents contend that as far asrthe
Internal Revenue Service is con-
cerned, they receive a salary and
can receive no deductions for edu-
cation.

COPJ's judicial mechanism, ap-
proved by the Regents in April,
went far in satisfying the often-
clashing constituencies at the Uni-
versity. Students received a size-
able voice and at the same time
faculty - administrator concerns
that the mechanism be firm were
realized.
Apollo crew
gets U' honors
The University will confer hon-
orary degrees on the Apollo 15 as-
tronauts at a special scientific
symposium Oct. 1, it was learned
yesterday.
Approved by the Regents at last
Friday's meeting, Col. David Scott,
Lieut. Col. James Irwin, and Maj.
Alfred Worden will receive the'
Doctor of Astronautical Science
degree on the basis of their "out-
standing scientific and technologi-
cal accomplishments" during the
Apollo 15 mission.
All three astronauts are Univer-
sity graduates.
Women call for
store boycott.
The local chapter of Women
to End the War (WUEW) have
4 asked that today be a "no-spend
day" in protest against the Indo-
china War.
In a campaign aimed at unit-
ing American women in a na-
tion-wide protest, the WUEW
urges all area women not to spend
money today.
"The intent of the boycott,"
said one of WUEW's leaders, Jean
Converse, "is not to deprive stores
of business, but to make women
aware of the feelings of other
women concerning the war."
According to Chris Gerse-
vitz, another of WUEW's organiz-
ers, refusing to spend money is a
private action all women can take.
"Women who haven't expressed
their feelings before about end-
ing United States' military in-
volvement in Indochina will have
a chance to protest," she says.
Today's boycott is the second
"no spend day" organized by
WUEW to protest the Vietnam
War.

"All interns and residents who
have tried to take the $3,600 de-
duction-available to any student
who receives a grant-have been
denied on the basis that theybare
on a salary and not on a learning
stipend. That makes us employes
in their eyes," says Brook.
According to Brook, the interns
and residents have mixed feelings
about unionization. Most of them.
he says, seem to look the other
way when the word 'union' is
mentioned.
However, even before the MERC
decision qualified them for un-
ionization members of IRA had
come close to withholding services.
In late January, the group pre-
sented a list of 15 demands to the
Medical school, ranging from sal-
ary increases to better sanitation
in the hospital.
"Some of the minor demands
were met," says B r o o k, "and
things kind of cooled off."
While admitting that he him-
self is ill at ease with the idea of
a union, Brook stresses that "It's
the only way they will listen to
us."

didn't sign her name the way she
