AR TAN CHALLENGE AWAITS ILLINI:

Michigan 7-Game Statistics

Purdue respects ' NU

By GARY LEVY
When Purdue coach Jim Young said, "We don't
ave a team that will blow anyone out," he must have
een overlooking today's opponent.
His league-leading Boilermakers host the lowly
Orthwestern Wildcats and should have no problem
emnaining atop the Big Ten standings for another
eek.
IN OTHER CONFERENCE action, Michigan State
ravels to Illinois, Ohio State invades Wisconsin and
innesota hosts Indiana.
The Purdue/Northwestern match-up features the
:onference's best and worst defenses. Purdue is
ielding an average of 250 yards per game and 7.7
oints per game as compared to NU's 429.6 yards and
17.2.points.
Although the game appears to be a mismatch
tAtistically, Young is following the well-known Big
en custom of. building up weak opponents.
'Northwestern is a passing team, and that always
:an be dangerous. A good passer can get hot and
:ause trouble at any time."
The Wildcats' good passer is junior Kevin Strasser.
-e ranks third in conference passing with 114
:ompletions in 221 attempts, good for 1,237 yards and
ive touchdowns. Strasser may have problems
hough, against the conference's number one
Ielse.
41 OFFENSE, Purdue has a balanced attack,
avifig gained 1,219 yards rushing and 1,248 yards
>agsing. Sophomore quarterback Mark Herrmann is
h& onference's second leading passer, and fullback
olt Macon and tailback Russell Pope are the third
uitfourth leading rushers respectively.
t in all, it looks like another gloomy day for the
hV y-plagued Wildcats.
chigan State needs a victory over the Illini to
tif in Big Ten title contention. The Spartans are
u rently involved in a three-way tie for second place
xi Michigan and Ohio State. This game also
{

appears to be one-sided statistically, matching
State's number one conference offense against the
Illini's ninth-ranked conference defense.
Spartan coach Darryl Rogers said, "You look at the
movies and you're impressed with Illinois. They play
very aggressively, well enough to win football games.
They're much better than their record indicates."
ROGERS SAID he was worried about Illinois' pass
defense, but it's the Illinois defense that will be doing
the worryipng when they try to stop Spartan
quarterback Eddie Smith's aerial barrage. Smith is

battle with Wisconsin. Ohio State has won its last 18
straight games over the Badgers and would love to
make it 19 in order to remain in the Big Ten title
chase.
The Buckeyes lead the conference in rushing with
298.7 yards per game. Tailback Ron Springs, fullback
Paul Campbell and freshman quarterback Art
Schlichter head the Ohio ground game. Schlichter is
also second in Big Ten total offense.
WISCONSIN MAY take to the air waves, as they
did last week with 48 pass attempts, in'order to upset
the Buckeyes. Ohio State is ranked dead last against
the pass in the Big Ten.
Tossing those passes will be junior quarterback
Mike Kalasmiki, but the man that makes the
Badgers' offense click is tailback Ira Matthews. He is
the Big Ten's all purpose running leader, averaging
118.4 yards per game.
In a game in which both teams are identical in
many aspects, the Minnesota Gophers tangle with the
Indiana Hoosiers. Both teams are tied for fifth place
in the Big Ten, the winning team hoping to finish in
the conference's first division at the season's close.
Both teams have similar attacks. Both have
allowed 103 points in Big Ten games, and Indiana has
outscored Minnesota 90 to 80 in conference games.
The Gophers are averaging 310 yards per game (173
rushing, 137 passing),, and the Hoosiers 323 (230
rushing, 93 passing).
The game could very well be decided by the
kickers, both teams featuring steady, accurate
kickers. Minnesota's Paul Rogind has kicked 46
straight extra points and is six of nine in field goals.
Indiana's David Freud has made 55 consecutive
conversions and is four of six on field goal
attempts.
Indiana Coach Lee Corso said of Minnesota,
"They're a tough, aggressive team and they'll try to
pound it out in us. We have a great respect for them,
particularly at their place."
