IAWKS RELY ON EXPERIENCE:
Uealthy Iowa optimistic

A reminder how to
get football tickets
For those of you who have not
picked up football tickets yet, here is
a reminder how to get those precious
little ducats in your possession.
Take your validated Michigan ID,
the stamped coupon you were given
at CRISP and another piece of iden-
tification - preferably with a pic-
ture on it. Take the aforementioned
articles to the Track/Tennis
Building located next to Fisher
(baseball) field and behind the In-
tramural Building between 8:00
a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
Since the tickets have already
been divided up and you have no say
in the matter as to where you sit, all
you have to do is pick up the tickets.
What this does is eliminate the
need to wait in long lines usually
formed two weeks before classes
start.
The important thing to keep in
mind is that the ticketsshould be
picked up before Monday, Septem-
ber 11. After that the tickets will be
at the ticket office on State Street,
corner Hoover until the 16th. After
that,...

IOWA CITY, Iowa (UPI) "If we
an stay healthy.."
Iowa football fans have been hearing
at cry for years and Coach Bob
ommings is sounding it again as he
tarts his fifth season with the
awkeyes, who haven't seen a winning
ecord since 1961.
Iowa always, seems to have talented
arters, but when too many of them get
urt, which happened during last year's
7 season, the team gets into trouble.
As a result, one of Commings' main
als this year is to do everything
ssible to keep his players healthy.
r example, he has cut down on his
ncern about getting enough contact
ork before the season opener Sept. 16
ainst Northwestern.t
"If we can practice our best players
nd play our best players, we'll be
ood," Commings said. "Last year, it
as just the opposite. We couldn't prac-
ice them and we couldn't play them.
Ve've lost eight offensive backs for one
eason or another since last spring. We
annot afford to lose any more.
"Realistically, it appears Iowa has
gore players than 'in the past. You've
eard us say two-platoon football is not
he best for Iowa. It's always a num-
ers game and at Iowa, we've always
~ome up short. Nobody has been a win-
er at Iowa since two-platoon football
s started."
Commings believes the 1978 Iowa
eam will be a winner, however. He has
4 returning starters among his 42 let-
ermen, plus a freshman class he calls
he best his staff has recruited.
Thel former Hawkeye lineman also
ays the schedule will work in the
eam's favor, with three of the first five
,ames at home. Iowa opens with Nor-
hwestern, Iowa State, Arizona, Utah
and Minnesota, then faces Ohio State in
Columbus.
"i. think it's extremely possible we

can win our first five games," he said.
"It's a very realistic proposition. We've
beaten all of those teams before.
"I think we can win those games and
I'll tell you something. If that happens,
we'll win in Columbus."
That may be a little strong for a
coach who has a lifetime collegiate
record of 15-29, but it's indicative of the
determination Commings has shown,
since inheriting a team that went 0-11 in
1973. He bases his optimism this year
around an experienced defense and
what he hopes will be an improved of-
fense.
Heading the defense is All-Big Ten
linebacker Tom Rusk, the team's
leading tackler the past two seasons.
Up front, sophomore tackle Kevin
Harty will be joined by experienced
players such as Joe Hufford, Doug Ben-
schoter, Darrell Hobbs, Steve Vazquez,
Dave Wagner and Bruce Kittle.
The secondary has five veterans, but
freshmen will have to provide depth
there.
"Many people, including me, felt the
defense was on the field too much last
year," Commings said. "In reviewing
films, we found that the defense was of-

ten its own worst enemy.
"Opponents really struck it rich on
third and long situations against us last
season. We've got to improve our pass
rush and we'll go to more of a zone
defense in the secondary."
Iowa finished seventh in the con-
ference in total offense last year, so
there is room for improvement in that
area. Injuries in the offensive line were
critical last season, but Commings said
the team will have more depth there
this year.
Tight end Jim Swift, tackle Sam
Palladino and guard Mike Mayer are
returning starters and sophomore
tackle Matt Petrzelka, who goes 6-feet-6
and 258 pounds, lettered last year.
Commings says sophomore center
Jay Hilgenberg could be the best ever
at Iowa and help is expected from Notre
Dame transfer John Hager, a 6-foot-5,
267-pound tackle.
Sophomore Bob Commings Jr., the
coach's son, probably will open at quar-
terback. He'll be joined in the backfield
by senior Jon Lazar and junior Dennis
Mosley, the top two rushers a yearago,
and Rod Morton, who also has some
starting experience.
