The Giants like so many o
NFL teams has a quarter
problem although their diff:
is one of quantity rather th
quality.

Conerly To Quarterback Team
38-yr.-old Charlie Conerly still
has the number one job, but Coach
Jim Lee Howell also has Shaw,
rookie Lee Grosscup and veteran
Den Heinrich as alternate choices.
All four have been used liberally in
exhibitions but the old master
Conerly still has the upper hand.
To go along with these star
passers the Giants have top re-
ceivers in Kyle Rote, Bob Schnelk-
er, rookie Buddy Dial and half-
back standouts Frank Gifford and
Alex Webster.
Phil King appears to have won
the fullback spot from Mel Trip-
plett and the famed Giant de-
fense remains intact from last
year, with the exception of Emlen
Tunell, who was traded to the
Packers.'
The Pittsburgh Steelers, acti-
vated by Buddy Parker last year,
are picked as the dark horse in
the East even though they have
failed to impress in exhibition
play.
Parker is counting on Bobby
Layne, a castoff from the Lions to
spearhead the Steeler attack.
The Steelers will be as good as
last year, but may not be able
to keep pace with the teams that
have improved over last year.
Ivy Rebuilds Cards
One of the teams that falls into
this category is the Chicago Card-
inals. Completely renovated last
year by Coach Pop Ivy, who in-
stalled his double wing formation, {
the Cards have undergone anoth-
er drastic rebuilding this season.
As a result of the Matson trade
the Cards have been able to beef
up their line. Card quarterback
hopes rest with King Hill, who
spent most of his rookie season
injured, and M. C. Reynolds cur-
rently on the injury list himself.
The, Washington Redskins led
by little Eddie LeBaron face a
tough road this year. They have
top flight runners in Jim Podo-
ley and Don Bossler, but their de-
fense has failed to measure up 'to
pro standards and they will prob-
ably have to pay the consequences.
The Eagles still have Norm Van
Brocklin throwing strikes, but the
rest of their young club has failed
to jell as a top NFL contender.
Coach Buck Shaw has put Van
Brocklin to good use and has de-
veloped Tommy MacDonald as a
fine receiver, but the Eagles'
ground game has failed to keep
pace with their aerial attack.
