By TOM WITECKI
ad Football Coach Bump El-
will be trying to keep a per-
1 record cleans this Saturday
a he sends his squad into ac-
against the Spartans of
igan State in the Michigan
Elliott had great success against
the Spartans in his playing days
at Michigan. An All-American
fullback, Elliott played on the
1946 and 1947 Wolverine squads'
that massacred the Michigan
Staters, 55-7 and 55-0.
Those were the days of Crisler's
Mad Magicians, an unbeaten, un-
tied squad, that .rated as one of
the strongest teams in collegiate
football history. In addition to
Elliott, this powerful 1947 squad
included Bob Chappius, Dick Rif-
enburg, Bump's brother Pete and
many other All-Americans, who
Michigan's all-time record book.
inscribed their names forever in
Michigan's Football Slipping
But since these golden days of
the late forties, Michigan's foot-
ball fortunes against the Spartans
and all other grid opponents have
slowly but surely been dipping,
with last year's 2-6-1 season being
the worst.
And in the annual grudge battle
with Michigan State, the Wolver-
ines have managed to win just
four out of the last 11 contests,
including last year's 12-12 tie at
East Lansing.
However, Michigan's lack of
success against the Spartans dur-
ing the past decade cannot all be
attributed to a Wolverine decline,.
but for the most part to a Michi-
gan State upswing.
Spartans Molded
Under the, skillfull hands of
Biggie Munn and Duffy Daugher-
ty, the Spartans have been molded
into a football machine that has
been rated among the best in the
nation several times.,
Until .1949, Michigan State
could boast only three All-Ameri-
cans, but since that time the
Spartans' powerhouse has turned
out such All-American greats as
Lynn Chandnois, Don Coleman, All
DIorow, Leroy Bolden, Earl Mor-
rill, Dan Currie, Walt Kowalszyk
and many others.
Last season for the first time in
nearly a decade, however, the
Spartan machine showed signs of
faltering and despite the presence
of several highly rated players
slumped to a 3-5-1 finish.
State Not Impressive
This fall, in spite of the return
of Blanche Martin, and the ap-
pearance of several widely her-
alded sophomores, the Michigan
Staters failed to impress in their
first appearance.
For the first time in many a
year neither the Spartans nor!
Wolverines were mentioned prom-
inently in pre-season polls; and
neither was rated to figure heavily
in the up-and-coming Big Ten
title' race..
..Thus, this
classic will not be in the national
limelight this week. But this fact
will seem terribly insignificant
when the two teams and over 100,-j
000 fans gather in the Michigan
Stadium Saturday.
Elliott Has Problem
Elliott's main problem in keep-
ing his perfect record against the
Spartans will be that a handful
of outstanding football players
will not be on the field with him
as they were in 1946 and 1947.
Instead the Michigan mentor
will have a couple dozen hungry
football players. But what has
been done with this group of play-
ers has been amazing. For with
many hours of hard work on the
part of him and his youthful staff,
Elliott has produced a squad that
is full of spirit and desire and has
no fear of hard work.
This has been obvious to those
who have attended the closed
practice sessions at Ferry Field
during the past week.
If perchance Elliott keeps his
perfect record against Michigan
State this Saturday, the three
qualities of spirit, desire and hard
work will have played a major;
role.

EAST LANSING W) - Fourteen
sophomores were on the 38-man
traveling roster as Coach Duffy
Daugherty yesterday named the
squad he will take to meet Michi-
gan in Saturday's football clash
at Ann Arbor.
MSU is visiting team for the
game and so has a limited bench
under Big Ten rules.
Daugherty made only one first
string lineup change. Sophomore
Art Brandstatter was moved up to
first string at right end, edging
out Senior Dave Northcross.
Dean Look was listed among the
quarterbacks making the trip but
is expected to be used only for
occasional punting chores because
of a sprained shoulder.
Last year, Look starred in the
12-12 tie which the bitter rivals
played in the Spartan Stadium.
He ran a punt back 90 yards for
the first touchdown and sparked
the second scoring drive.
