"The Largest Little Store in Town"
PIPES, CIGARS, TOBACCO, CIGARETTES

By ALAN Z. SHULMAN
At this time of the year, a news-
paper usually sends its inquiring
reporter out amongst the masses
to sample their feelings about
Christmas. Too often, he returns
with good cheer, season's greet-
ings, good will toward men and
glowing sentiment.
T h e malevolent Christmas
seems to have almost faded into
oblivion.

Rather than add my voice to
this chorus of glad tidings, I de-
cided to see how Christmas was
observed a few centuries ago. In
my research, I discovered a mono-
graph entitled, "The Quaint Cus-
toms of Englishmen under John I
(1273-1294)," from which the fol-
lowing passage is taken:
Onfie Once a Yire
"Aye, ant 'tis this season of,

The perfect touch - to make
your Christmas what it should be
-is now possible.
Artistic, c r e a t i v e wrappings.
That's all there is to making your
Christmas '63 a special one.
First, assemble the necessary
equipment. Scissors, tape, wrap-
ping paper, ribbon, bows, name
tags, pens to address the tags,
string, and of course, the gift it-
self.
How To Begin
Now you are ready to begin:
take the first package and attempt
to cut a piece of wrapping paper
which will fit the gift snugly. To
do this well requires a skill which
is generally acquired only after
years of experience; so don't de-
spair if the first few times the
paper comes out short.
Next, put the paper around the
package. This is an important step,
and shouldn't be overlooked.
The most difficult part still re-
mains--to select the proper color
and style of ribbon and to tie the
right type of bow. Essentially,
ribbon tying is nothing more than
tying a shoe lace, although shoe
strings are certainly not recom-
mended for Christmas packages.
Use Double Knot
To create more suspense at the
time of opening the package, a
double knot can be tied. This is
also a challenge to the ingenuity
of the person who receives the
package.
Finally comes the name tag.
This is important, so be sure to
display the tag prominently on
the package. And be sure to in-
clude your own name. This as-
sures your receiving a gift in ex-
change.
