Well-Wrapped
By LEONARD PRATT
The most important thing to
consider in mailing Christmas
gifts is preparing and addressing
the package.
The first step in mailing a
Christmas package should be a
check with the local post office
about size regulations. At the same
time, the zip code of the addressee
should be checked and used.
The package should be caie- x
fully wrapped in heavy paper and
twine. Be sure to mark it plainly
if the contents are perishable or
fragile. A letter may be included
if the necessary postage is paid
and the package is marked as
containing a letter.
Card Postage
Christmas cards may be sent for
four cents if no message is in-
cluded. The cost rises to five cents
for every card with a note attach-
ed.
Phone books may be mislead-
ing about addresses. Merely be-
cause a city is grouped under a
general heading in a telephone
directory does not mean it will be
grouped under the same heading
by the United States Post Office.
For example, many addresses
in the Ann Arbor phone book are
not included under the Ann Arbor
post office; they come under the
jurisdiction of post offices at Bell-
ville and Plymouth. All uncertain
addresses should be checked with AVO
your local post office. the c

BOOKS, BEARDS, HULAS:
The Professor's Christmas Holiday: Anything Goes

By ALISON SMALLEY
Peek over a professor's desk
sometime and you may see the
vacation days on his calendar
circled with as much abandon as
they are on your date reminder.
Professors do many different
things on holidays. In fact,'it is
only the very perceptive student
who can recognize his thin, beard-
ed ancient history professor
swiveling to a hula in Honolulu.
Even though this is an ancient
tribual dance, it is doubtful that
it will lend much to the Greek
concept of government which he
teaches.
There is a type of professor for
every type cf vacation. The French
teacher, who has traveled every
summer to Switzer]-and or France,
is content to stay at home for the
Christmas holidays. He may even
start to grow a little beard that
was so popular in St. Moritz last
year.
Skiing Proiessors
There is always the avid skier,
who plops his family into the sta-
tion wagon, and heads fnr the
hills. Every year he breaks an
ankle, or leg or both, but the next

year he is back for more. Need
it be said that our sportsman
teaches psychology to medical
students?
Some professors remain scho-
lars throughout the year, vacation
or not. Deep within the general
library, they wander among the
dusty books. Spectacles polished,
magnifying glass poised, these
professors spend day after day
probing for bits of information to
present to students in January.
Everyone to his own pleasure!
It is always the campus heart-
throb on the teaching staff who
yearns for the title, "Best Duck
Hunter of the Year." Give him a
marsh, a thermos of coffee, a rifle
and, of course, some ducks, and he
has found Utopia.
Vacation Variety
One never knows in what form
a Stewart Udall of the University
will appear. The chemistry pro-
fessor who is lost in formulas and
equations, breaks away to become
a fearless climber on Mount Ev-
erest. The astronomy lecturer may
prefer scuba diving off Florida's
coast. There's no better time for

a change of scenery than on a va-
cation.
Although Stratford - on - Avon
sees many English professors, it is
doubtful that the University sends
too many representatives to Eng-
land during Christmas. A better
place to look for those theme
assigners is Greenwich Village,
where beat poetry and expresso
stir the imagination.
We can always find a family
man on the faculty. Good-natur-
edly, he devotes his vacation to
what the kiddies want to do. He
is the one who misses part of

second semester due to pneumo-
nia. That will teach you to tent
in the snow, Pied Piper.
Self-Improvement
To some teachers, vacation
means self-improvement time.
women are off to beauty parlors;
overweight teaching fellows are
off to reducing salons. Dentists
and doctors are invaded by once-
a-year clients.
We must not forget the typical
professor; the one who wants to
finish writing his third book; the
art teacher who yearns to finishl
his masterpiece; the Great Books

educator who was planning to
draw up a new sheaf of exams.
Enterprising professors find the
Christmas holiday a perfect time
to supplement their yearly income.
There's a whole month to wield a
shovel or push a mop to make the
bank balance rise.
Students who pity the professor
after finals, thinking of the stacks
of papers that they'll have to cor-
rect, need not worry. These en-
terprising and adventurous men
and women have a good time on
their vacations. Students might
even pick up a few ideas
