Quarterback Post Remains, 'Up in the Air'

II

By BILL BULLARD
Michigan's quarterback situa-
tion is "still up in the air" after
last Saturcay's scrimmage, accord-
ing to Coach Bump Elliott.
Frosty Evashevski has moved
higher in Elliott's estimation since
Saturday when he and the other
white signal callers almost led the
third and fourth stringers to an
upset victory over the first and
second string blue squad.
Leads Victory
Bob Timberlake, the blue quar-
terback, managed to lead his unit
to a 32-30 victory after engineer-
ing two quick touchdowns at the
start of the scrimmage. Most of
the excitement of the scrimmage
was caused by the white team's
offensive drives which put it back
in the contest.
Evashevski passed for one TD
while teammate Pete Hollis pass-
ed for two others. "Evashevski
looked very good Saturday," said
Elliott. "He's moving higher into
the quarterback picture."
The performance of Hollis, a
Detroit sophomore, was labeled
"very creditable" by Elliott. One
difficulty that stands in Iollis'
way according to Elliott is that
there is no lack of experienced
quarterbacks on the team and it's
hard for a sophomore to overcome
this quickly.
Chandler Sidelined
Timberlake had to carry the
brunt of the quarterbacking duties
Saturday with No. 2 man Bob
Chandler sidelined with an ankle
injury. "Chandler's ankle just
hasn't been coming around like
it should," said Elliott. "He's fall-
en behind a little now because of
it."
However, Chandler was in good
enough shape to suit up and prac-
tice his passing yesterday. He is
expected to resume full action
shortly..
Elliott acknowledged that Tim-
berlake has the edge on the other
quarterback candidates on the
basis of his all-around play. Tim-
berlake had more combined offen-
sive and defensive experience last
season than any of the others.
Passing Reputation
This is in contrast to Chandler,
Evashevski and Hollis who have
the reputations of primarily being
passers. "They may have that
reputation," admitted Elliott, "but
they can do their other jobs also."
Elliott discussed the switching

of sophomore Jack Clancy from
quarterback to halfback. "We
moved Jack because we wanted
to make use of his running abil-
ity," he said.
Running Backs
"If a fellow is a quarterback
and can run, then sometimes we'll
try him at halfback especially if
we already have experienced quar-
terbacks," Elliott continued. "Act-
ually it's all a matter of trying to
get the proper use out of your
personnel. You can always be
second-guessed when you lose by
those who say you should have
played your personnel elsewhere,
though."
Timberlake was shifted to half-
back last season to make use of
his running ability.. Likewise sen-
ior Tom Prichard switched from
quarterback to halfback and is
now back at quarterback. He is
expected to play mostly on de-
fense.
At practice yesterday ends Bill
Laskey, Ben Farabee and John
Henderson were out of full action
with minor ailments. "Physically,
we're in as good a shape as we
have been all year," said Elliott.

MADISON-Wisconsin's chances
to repeat as Big Ten Conference
football champions were dealt a
setback yesterday when first team
guard D i o n Kempthorne an-
nounced he was giving up the
sport.
Kempthorne, a senior and dou-
ble-letter winner from Dubuque,
Iowa, has been beset with injuries
since the end of last season when
a stomach ailment forced him to
miss the Rose Bowl.
Last week the 5-foot-11, 215-
pound lineman was confined to
the infirmary for a series of X-
rays on his back. Coach Milt
Bruhn described Kempthorne's re-
tirement "a heavy loss."
The Badgers continued their
twice daily workouts while Bruhn
made four position shifts.
NU Loses Two
EVANSTON-The Northwestern
football team lost two more play-
ers for the season yesterday be-
cause of ailments.
Senior halfback Jerry Daugher-
ty suffered a fractured knee bone
in Saturday's scrimmage and
sophomore halfback Ron Gerouard
quit the squad because of recur-
ring headaches.
The Wildcats worked on their
kicking game.
OSU Prepares
COLUMBUS - Despite the ex-
treme heat, Coach Woody Hayes
sent his Ohio State Buckeyes
through two hard football prac-
tices yesterday in preparation for
the opener against Texas A&M
here Sept. 28.
End Terry Meyer and tackle
Doug Van Horn each lost 11
pounds during the day, Meyer
"shrinking" to 222 and Van Horn
to 225. Center Ike Kelley lost nine
pounds, weighing in at 206 at the
end of the day.

Hayes predicted that Paul War-
field, senior halfback, will have a
great season. The coach said, "He's
a fine receiver and we are throw-
ing the ball more."
Hoosiers Tackle
BLOOMINGTON - Indiana's
football squad emphasized play
timing and ball handling in prac-
tice yesterday, and Coach Phil
Dickens noted with pleasure only
one fumble,, compared to 11 in
Saturday's first big scrimmage.
Dickens said the squad's tack-
ling was "away ahead of the rest
of the game" and "we still have
our hard-nosed spirit."
He said sophomore quarterback
Dave Mayoras, Decatur, Ill., es-
tablished himself as a strong can-
didate for the safety slot in Satur-
day's game by intercepting one
pass, knocking down another and
making 20 tackles.
Illini Guards Switch
CHAMPAIGN - First string
guards of the Illinois football team
were switched yesterday and Dave
Mueller moved to No. 1 left end
to replace the injured Bill Pasko.
Pasko has a hip injury which
will keep him out of contact work
this week. Guard Dick Deller was
switched to felt and Lynn Stewart
to right following Illinois' first
squad game Saturday.
Coach Pete Elliott made other
position shifts below the first team
level. And ends Gregg Schunacher
and Mike Summers were in pads
yesterday and working for the
second team. They were out last
week with pulled leg muscles.

Soph Breaks Leg
IOWA CITY - Jim Wagner, a
185-pound sophomore, suffered a
broken leg in practice yesterday
shortly after football Coach Jerry
Burns had announced plans to
move Wagner up to third team
left halfback.
Wagner will be out for tl sea-
son.
The injury to Wagner of Cedar
Rapids, Iowa, came in offensive
scrimmage in the workouts final
15 minutes.

PRACTICE SHOTS-Practice continues at Ferry Field with three
weeks to go until the opening game of the season. In the top
picture, a white back is about to break into the secondary. With
the white team on defense in the bottom picture, two white play-
ers tackle a red shirt.
