3. R. Thomsen, B.S.M.E., University of Nebraska,
'58, came to Western Electric for several reasons.
Important to him was the fact that our young engi-
neers play vital roles right from the start, working
on exciting engineering projects in communica-
tions including: electronic switching, thin film cir-
cuitry, microwave systems and optical masers.
Western Electric's wide variety of challenging
assignments appealed to Tom, as did the idea of

facturing costs of telephone switching equipment,
