MSU Athletic Director Biggie
Munn announced the firing.
"It was a most difficult decision
for me to make," Munn said, "but
our basketball fortunes of late
have not been what we'd like them
to be and in order to improve this
picture this decision was made." '
Munn said Anderson, who has
academic tenure, will stay on at
Michigan State in another ca-
pacity yet to be determined.

Anderson had high hopes for3
next season, saying he had as-
sembled one of the best fresh-
man teams in years.
"This is the last season we'll
have to suffer," he promised.
Michigan State's basketball im-
age suffered particularly this sea-
son, being overshadowed by the
rival Michigan Wolverines, the
conference winner and runner-up
in the national championship
tournament at Portland, Ore.
Anderson issued a somewhat bit-
ter statement.

He said he learned of his dis-
missal "with deep regret."
"I'm sorry Mr. Munn does not
consider me adequate to continue
the duties involving the basketball
fortunes of Michigan State an'i
for this I am deeply disappoint-
ed," he said.
Anderson, 46, said he "hoped the
university would find a place for
me" and asked fans "to accept
- my apologies for our inability to
do better, especially in view of
the interest shown by our many
supporters in the past."

VERO BEACH, Fla.-The Los
Angeles Dodgers received a scare
yesterday as star left hander San-
dy Koufax left the spring train-
ing base here and flew to Los
Angeles for examination for swell-
ing and stiffness in his pitching
elbow.
The Dodgers sent the 29-year-
old strikeout king tobe examined
by Dr. Robert Kerlan, the ortho-
pedic specialist who treated Kou-
fax last August when he was
sidelined for the balance of the
season with an elbow injury.
"Sandy came to me and said he
was worried because his arm was
stiff and swollen," said Dodger
General Manager E. J. (Buzzie)
Bavasi. "We phoned Dr. Kerlan
and he advised Sandy to fly to
Los Angeles. Dr. Kerlan wants to
take X-rays of the elbow today
and compare them with X-rays he
took last year."
