Hats Essential for the Proper Silhouette

'LITTLE GIRL LOOK':
Dresses To Feature 'Chelsea' Styling

By KITTY JOHNSON
This spring, hats are "very es-
sential for the proper silhouette,"
according to Anya Finkel, man-
ager of the millinery department
of Jacobson's department store.
She stressed that women are not

Perhaps the biggest innovation
this spring is the use of lace in a
gingerbready, antimaccassar look.
It is used frequently in the Lon-
don look for sleeves, neckline bibs,
and various trim. It occurs in the
lacey white stockings that seem
to be worn with every new fash-
ion. And it makes a striking hit
in sleevesless and sleeved witty
sweaters.

High Fashion
Returns To
Potato Sack
LONDON (A) - The lowly po-
tato sack has become a daring
gimmick of high fashion.
For kicks and a charity hair-
style show, the sponsors found a
dozen coarse-grained sacks, used
in Britain for hauling spuds from
the potato fields to markets.
Laundered and taken apart, the
sacks were then designed into
dresses. As an added gimmick,
holes 6 inches long by 4 inches
wides, were cut in the middle of
the sack dresses.
The necks were scooped very
low and the only other adorn-
ments were rough black trimming
around the see-through holes, the
low plunging neck lines and the
chopped off sleeves. Then, as an
added fillip, the dresses were slit
up the sides in the fashion of
Chinese cheongsams.
The hair-stylists said they chose
this unique garment to better
show off the hair styles they were
introducing.
Aeedless to say, the .sack-with-
the-hole-in-it dresses also showed
off a great deal of the girls 'model-
ing them.
Fewer Underclothes
The sack dress definitely is not
the sort of garment that goes har-
moniously with underclothes. In
fact, the fewer underclothes worn,
the better. A bra is unwearable
because the neck swoops so low
that the bra would be exposed. So
- no bra.
As for the hole in the middle -
well. Being smack in the front
of the dress, located midway be-
tween the girl's chin and her
knees, it gives a clear, unobstruct-
ed view of the navel.
Modesty
For modesty's sake, Australian-
born model Suzette Markwell, 19,
from Sydney, wore a pair of thick
black stockings.

SALUTING THE CHELSEA LOOK in spring fashion, this Pic-
cadilly dress, with an empire waistline accented by a ribbon tie,
flounced sleeves and hem, adds a "little girl look" to campus
fashions. The vivid patterns and prints highlight this return to
femininity, as does the A-line skirt which is so comfortable on
warm days. For classes or dates, this young style is sure to find
favor this season.
