Madras To Run the Accessory Scene

By BOB MOORE

tal stripes, madras, and raw silks
will dominate the tie scene this

Clothiers like to tell the story spring.y
of the visitor from France who Stripes
toured American clothing shops Stripes and madras patterns
last, summer. According to the ought to dominate regular sport
legend, the Frenchman studied all shirts. Knit Banlons will be class-;
the madras in the stores, then ics, of course: a knit 3-button
turned wide-eyed to his guide: Henley shirt wit h a collarless neck

fabric, you certainly push it."'wear.

A new fabric blend called "Ox-
-knit," cooler, wider, softer, could
make a big kiling in the dress
shirt arena, which remains im-
mutable.
On the whole, then, men's ac-
cessories will be about the same
as before.
Madras and stripes will dom-
inate; but a few new styles are
being presented, and some of those
are bound to become new classics.

Madras is the story in men's ac-i
cessories this spring, although
there are a few non-madras in-
novations which might catch on.
Yellow Shirt
the yellow shirt, the fine-wov-
en V-neck sweater, and plain
slacks are expected to be most
popular for the cooler spring days.
Holding up the works will be the
f' madras belt, tending this season
to be bulkier, more rugged design
with saddle-leather trim and brass
buckles.
Further on into warmer weath-
er, of course, madras shirts should
become favorites. Then it is a
matter of individual taste wheth-
er to wear madras belt with ma-
dras shirt; it has been done, but
most conservative dressers con-
demn the practice. For those con-
servative people, plain leather or
seersucker should be popular.
"Cinch Belt"
A new product called the "cinch
belt" has appeared at campus
stores.
The cinch belt is of thick, po-
lished leather and is for the two-
ring brass "cinch" (yes, like in
harnesses) which takes, the place
of the usual buckle.

per clips, and recording, tape are
Out for belts this spring.
Men's jewelry will be about the
same except for one trend. Tie
tacks, long-time favorite, are
steadily giving way to plain con-
servative tie bars. Collar bars may
see a revival, both for eyelet col-
lar shirts and standard shirts.
There is a new watchband on
the market, wider by about one
quarter an inch, heavier, with
leather straps to hold the watch.
The new band comes primarily in
madras, but solid colors should be'
popular also.
Jade East
Men's toiletries are expected to
remain the same. Stores report
highest sales of "English Leather,"
"Jade East," and "Royal Lime."
Expected to be seen a lot among
the sport group is the common
golf hat or "crusher," of natural
poplin, a kind of clay-color gray,
With a sharp madras or regimental
striped hatband.
Striped shirts will continue to
be big sellers. Opinions vary as to.
whether the pinstripe or wider,
striping is more stylish in shirts;
stores report approximately equal
sales.
Controversy
One controversy which only
time will settle is whether the new
four-inch wide tie will sell. In the1
past year, ties have been mainly,
between two and five eighths andI
two and three-quarter inches. !
Pattern-wise, however, regimen-
