AT WIMBLEDON:
Santana Wins Title

For Direct Classified Ad Service, Phone 764-0557
Monday through Friday, 12 Noon to 2 P.M.

WIMBLEDON, England (I) -
Manuel Santana, the pride of
Spain, out-maneuvered Dennis
Ralston, of Bakersfield, Calif., 6-4,
11-9, 6-4 in a classic final yester-
day and brought the Wimbledon
tennis titlerback to Europe after
12 years.
The grinning 28-year-old Span-
iard won the crown-the world's
most coveted tennis prize-with a
blend of power and subtlety that
made him a popular hero with the
15,000 fans. Yet for most of the
match Ralston, 23, matched him
shot for shot.
As the drama rose to its cli-
max in the close and torrid atmos-
phere of Wimbledon's center court,
Ralston's nerve failed him and he
fell into double faults and volley-
ing errors.
Santana kept going steadily with
spin and drop, stop-volley and
smash, and finally won in three
straight sets. Yet each set was taut
and finely balanced.
At the end Santana was given
the most emotional reception any
Wimbledon champion has received
since Czech-born Jaroslav Drobny,
who was the last European to win
the title back in 1954.
Santana proved during the two
weeks tournament that delicate
artistry can still hold the whip
hand over modern power play. Al-
so, he endeared himself to the
fans by his personality .and sense
of humor.
The match reached the heights
in the second set, which see-sawed
dramatically and lasted 53 min-
utes.
Ralston, after losing only one
point, in his first two service
games, broke through to lead 3-1.
A forehand that touched the
net and jumped over Santana's
shoulder took the score to deuce.;
Ralston next hit a superb back-
hand pass, and followed that with
a powerful forehand which San-
tana volleyed into the net.
Three games later a magnificent
lob from Santana caught Ralston
by surprise as he moved forward-
and the Spaniard had broken
back.
In the eighth game, Santana
hurt his back chasing a lob be-
hind his baseline. For a while af-

terwards he rubbed it as if in
pain, and twice he had to struggle
to hold his service. In the 12th
game Ralston was within a point
of another break-through.
But the cut-and-thrust went
on, with the crowd completely ab-
sorbed, until a dramatic turn of
fortune sent Santana ahead at
10-9. A smash from Ralston was
called out by the linesman.
Ralston, though taken aback
by the decision, accepted it grace-
fully but was ruffled, and served
two doublefaults in succession.
An ace from Santana clinched
the set one game later.
