MAJOR LEAGUE ROUNDUP:

Tigers Nip Senators, 4-3

For Direct Classified Ad Service, Phone 764-0557
Monday through Friday, 12 Noon to 2 P.M.

By The Associated Press
DETROIT - Eighth-inning sin-,
gles by Jim Northrup and Bill
Freehan, and Gates Brown's sac-
rifice fly gave the Detroit Tigers
a 4-3 victory over Washington last
night. The loss was the eighth
straight for the Senators.
Dave Wickersham, who struck
out 11 beforebeing lifted for a
pinch hitter in the eighth, picked
up his third victory in as many
decisions.
The Senators had rallied to tie
the score on Don Blasingame's
leadoff homer in the sixth inning
and a two-run pinch homer by
Don Lock in the seventh.
Wickersham doubled home Ray
Oyler, who had singled, for the
first Detroit run in the third
inning.
Detroit added two more runs in
the fifth on a single by Oyler, a
sacrifice, and singles by Dick Mc-
Auliffe and Norm Cash.

Orioles Keep Winning
BALTIMORE - The Robinson
boys, Frank and Brooks, knocked
in five runs with homers last night
as the Baltimore Orioles crushed
the New York Yankees 8-0 behind
the three-hit pitching of Jim Pal-
mer and Eddie Watt.
Frank Robinson connected with
two runners aboard in the third
inning off loser Al Downing, ex-
tending his home run total to 16.
It came after a walk to Palmer
and a single by Luis Aparicio.

Brooks socked his 10th homer
off reliever Pedro Ramos in theI
seventh following a two-out single'
by Frank.
The victory was the 13th in the
last 16 games for Baltimore, which
has an 18-6 record against New
York over the past two seasons.
Giants Blank Cubs
SAN FRANCISCO--San Fran-
cisco's Gaylord Perry made his
first start in 17 days yesterday
and gave up only three hits in
seven innings as the Giants beat
the Chicago Cubs 8-0.
Perry, who was on the disabled
list for 15 days with a bad ankle,
gave way to Lindy McDaniel in
the eighth and the ex-Cub reliever
completed the shutout.
After Willie McCovey hit a solo
homer in the second, the Giants
jumped on starter Ernie Broglio
and reliever Ferguson Jenkins for
six runs in the third after two
outs.
Mets, Cards Split
NEW YORK-Lou Brock rapped
two singles and a triple, touching
off run-scoring innings with each
hit, as the St. Louis Cardinals beat
the New York Mets 4-1 last night
for a split of their doubleheader.
The Mets won the twi-light
game 5-2 on Bob Taylor's three-
run homer .and the five-hit pitch-
ing of Bob Shaw, who was making
his New York debut.

Shaw, purchased by the Mets
last Friday from San Francisco,
allowed only two singles after the
first inning of the opener, when
the Cardinals scored twice on
Phil Gagliano's triple, singles by
Curt Flood and Francona and an
infield out.
Phillies Take Two
PHILADELPHIA-Jack Brandt,
used mainly as a late-inning de-
fensive replacement, socked a
homer and a triple that triggered
Philadelphia to a 6-4 victory over
Atlanta and a sweep of a twi-
night doubleheader yesterday.
Brandt, starting his second
game in the last 15, slanuned his
first home run of the season for a
1-0 lead in the third inning of
the nightcap and tripled home the
first tally in a five-run fifth that
iced the game.

Special To The Daily
MIAMI--After the first day of
competition in the NCAA Tennis
Tournament here yesterday Mich-
igan's record stands at two wins,
one loss, and one incomplete
match.
The four Wolverines selected by
Coach Bill Murphy to compete in
the tournament - Karl Hedrick,
Jerry Stewart, Ed Waits, and Ron
Teeguarden - opened yesterday
with first round singles play and
begin doubles competition today.
Waits, Hedrick Win
In the completed matches Waits
and Hedrick both advanced to the
second round after winning in
straight sets. Hedrick topped John
McCabe of Stanford, 7-5, 6-2; and
Waits whipped his opponent, Fred
Suessman of California State at
Long Beach, 6-1, 6-2.
In the one Wolverine setback,
Teeguarden won the first set but
was upended by Fred Berli of Pan
American, 4-6, 9-7, 6-2.
In the remaining match Stewart
won the first set 6-2 in his con-
test with Rick Chase of Florida,
but dropped a marathon second
set 11-9 after which the match
was called because of darkness.
The match will be completed to-
day.

Win In College
World Series
By The Associated Press
OMAHA-Top-ranked Southern
California started its quest of the
college world series baseball crown
by beating North Carolina 6-2 last
night with an opportunistic seven-
hit attack behind John Stewart's
pitching.
Second-ranked Ohio State met
Oklahoma State in the final first-
round game of the 20th NCAA

action, Hedrick and Stewart, the
Big Ten number one doubles
championship duo, will team up
and Waits and Teeguarden will be
paired.
Unlike the Big Ten champion-
ships the NCAA does not have sep-
arate brackets for each position
on the team and only one singles
and one doubles title are awarded.
The team totals after the first
day's action show Southern Cali-
fornia leading with four points
followed by several other teams at
three and two points each. One
point is awarded for each match
won, and Michigan currently
stands at two points pending the
completion of Stewart's first-
round match.

FEDERATION TRACK MEET:
Soudek, Westfield Score;
Wolverines Fail To Place

Michigan's entrants in the U. S.
Track and Field Federation meet
performed below par and failed to
place, but two former Wolverine
thinclads now competing for the
Ann Arbor Track Club managed
to pick up points in the meet at
Terre Haute last weekend.
Ernst Soudek took a second
place in the discus and Bryan
Westfield took a sixth in the 440-
yard intermediate hurdles to gain
spots in the National AAU cham-
pionships and a chance to com-
pete for a berth on the United
States team in the annual dual
meet with Russia if the AAU-
NCAA dispute is settled.
Soudek Takes Second
Soudek flipped the platter 183'
3" to finish behind Gary Carlsen
of Southern California, who won
the event with a meet record of
191' 7%". Carlsen topped the old
record of 186' 9%1" set by Stan-
ford's Bob Stocker last year.

classed in the half-mile event in
which Jim Ryun of Kansas set a1
new world record of 1:44.9-failed
to make the finals.
Wolverines George CanamareI
and Rick Hunt both had marks
far below their previous bests as
Canamare failed to clear 14' in the
pole vault and Hunt could not top
6' 4" in the high jump.
In the event billed as the meet's
highlight U. S. record-holder
Ryun ran a 4:02.8 mile. Ryun, who_
had run in the half mile trials
and set a world record in the 880
finals on Friday won the event but
disappointed fans hoping for a
world record or at least a sub
four-minute mile.
Jayhawks Win
The Jayhawk Track Club, com-
posed of Kansas freshmen plus
the varsity team, ran away with
the team title with 77 points to
runner-up New Mexico's 55 and
Brigham Young's 50.
Most of the athletes who par-
ticipated in the meet will be com-
peting in the NCAA meet in In-
dianapolis this weekend, and if'
the AAU dispute is settled, the
best will go to New York for the
AAU championships, June 25-26.
Besides Ryun's half-mile record
another world record was shatter-
ed over the weekend when Tommy
Smith of San Jose State set a-
mark of 20 seconds flat for theI
220-yard dash around a curve in
the Sacramento Invitational Sat-
urday. Smith already holds the
pending world record for the
straightaway 220 with a :19.5
clocking.
