1ST Tests
New Radar
Frequency
By ROBERT FARRELL
Institute of Science and Tech-
nology scientists are experiment-
ing with a new , type of radar
system that may have greater
range and resolution ability for
some applications.
The system, which used red
light radiation reflected off the
targets rather than the conven-
tional microwaves (extremely low
frequency invisible radiation), has
been used with good results over
distances of about three miles at
the Willow Run Laboratories, part
of IST.
Experimentation at greater dis-
tances is still continuing, Lloyd
G. Cross, IST research associate
on the project, reported.
Invent Laser
The production of intense, mon-
ochromatic (single wavelength)
lights has only recently become
possible, through the invention of
the device called a laser, short for
"light amplification by stimulat-
ed emmission of radiation."
The light generated by such de-
vices is projected in a very tight
beam at the target, and the por-
tion that is reflected back to the
installation is measured by photo-
sensitive mechanisms. This pro-
cedure is basically the same as
that used in standard radars.'
However, because of the short
wavelengths of the light in com-
parison with standard radar mic-
rowaves, a much smaller antenna
will serve to provide equally much
or more detail in the final pic-
ture.
Gives Actual Picture
Also, in contrast with stand-
ard radars, the information gain-
ed by the new device may be dis-
played as an actual picture of the
scene observed, although the use
of only red light may mean that
the shading displayed will be
slightly different than that which
would be seen in a standard black-
and-white photograph.
Gross also said that the new
system, called an "optical radar,"
might be particularly useful in
space applications, where smaller
and lighter antennas would serve
to provide greater ranges than
standard microwave radars. He
also suggested that the same basic
system might be used for commu-
nications in outer space.
Postpone Recital
Of Brahn's Duet
A faculty recital by Prof. Mil-
lard Cates, tenor, and Prof. Eu-

been postponed until March 5.
They will present Brahm's
