INCOME, OCCUPATION:
Study Views Influences on Education

Challenge
Colloquium
Dec. 13,1961
"Review of
Alternatives to War
in the Nuclear Age"
EUGENE RABINOWICH,
Ed. of Bulletin of
Atomic Scientists

The education, occupation, in-
come, and religion of the father
influences the amount and qual-
ity of education received by his
children, a study of the University
Survey Research Center recently
concluded.
Their report on "Educational'
Achievement-Its Causes and Ef-
fects" also found that there is a
great deal of upward mobility from
one generation to the next with
each generation tending to get
more education than the last.
Low income, however, generally
means low education. And low ed-

ucation, in turn, means more low
income. The SRC study reported
that more than one third of those
who are employes and do not have
a high school diploma said they
were unemployed at least once
during the last five years.
Another important factor is the
occupation of the father. Chil-
dren of high status workers tend
to get more education than the
average. In addition, the number
of children in a family is im-
portant; children of smaller fam-
ilies tend to get more education.
