Art Auction
Yields Funds
For College
By ALAN MAGID
Necks craned for a better look
at the art objects offered for
sale at the annual Art Auction,
held yesterday by the School of
Architecture and Design.
The bidding was under the able
hammer of Prof. Joseph Wehrer
and other members of the A&D
faculty. Students and faculty con-
tributed prints, oils, sculpture,
jewlery and pottery for the sale.
Art Treasures
The main lobby of the A & D
college was filled with people in-
terested in picking up treasurers
at bargain prices for decorating
home and office. Some notable
prints and ink drawings went at
low prices.
One bidder paid $27 for a polish-
ed and oxidized sterling silver
bracelet made and donated by a
faculty member. Sterling cuff-links
by the same artisan brought $15.
Pottery made the best showing
with several pieces commanding
prices close to $20. An enthusiastic
collector paid $56 for a giant three
and one-half foot clay pot by
J. T. Abernathy. The auctioneer
reassured the buyer that the task
of carrying the massive pot out
of the building would not be his
alone.
Zen Buddhist Music
The bidding on a package of
unseen long-playing records was
going slowly until Prof. Wehrer
offered the audience a peek into
the contents of the collection. The
music of Zen Buddhism spurred
the bidding to a frenzy of waving
arms eager to capture that exotic
morsel.
The danger, familiar to any
auction devotee, of any rapid
movement was present at yester-
day's gathering. One inexperienced
bidder found himself the owner
of a pen and ink drawing merely
for satisfying the demands, of an
itching ear.
The auction provides an annual
opportunity for local artists to
clear some of the rubble from
their studios. The proceeds from
the auction will be used to finance
the 5th Annual A & D Open
House.
