The bidding was under the able hammer of Prof. Joseph Wehrer and other members of the A&D faculty. Students and faculty con- tributed prints, oils, sculpture, jewlery and pottery for the sale. Art Treasures The main lobby of the A & D college was filled with people in- terested in picking up treasurers at bargain prices for decorating home and office. Some notable prints and ink drawings went at low prices. One bidder paid $27 for a polish- ed and oxidized sterling silver bracelet made and donated by a faculty member. Sterling cuff-links by the same artisan brought $15. Pottery made the best showing with several pieces commanding prices close to $20. An enthusiastic collector paid $56 for a giant three and one-half foot clay pot by J. T. Abernathy. The auctioneer reassured the buyer that the task of carrying the massive pot out of the building would not be his alone. Zen Buddhist Music The bidding on a package of unseen long-playing records was going slowly until Prof. Wehrer offered the audience a peek into the contents of the collection. The music of Zen Buddhism spurred the bidding to a frenzy of waving arms eager to capture that exotic morsel. The danger, familiar to any auction devotee, of any rapid movement was present at yester- day's gathering. One inexperienced bidder found himself the owner of a pen and ink drawing merely for satisfying the demands, of an itching ear. The auction provides an annual opportunity for local artists to clear some of the rubble from their studios. The proceeds from the auction will be used to finance the 5th Annual A & D Open House. Voice Plans Arms Race Symposium During the month of May, Voice Political Party, in cooperation with the Ann Arbor Women for Peace, will present a four-part symposium on the arms race. Professor Amitai Etzioni of the sociology department of Columbia University will lead off the series on Monday, May 7, speaking about the "gradualist approach" for end- ing the cold war. Prof. Etzioni is the author of the recent book "The Hard Way to Peace." On Thursday, May 10, Prof. Kenneth Boulding of the econom- ics department will talk on a "Plan for Survival." Prof. Bpuld- ing, whose new book "Conflict and Defense" has just come out, is also director of the Center for the Study of Conflict Resolution. Editor and Author On Thursday, May 17, Prof. Sey- "mour Melman of the industrial en- gineering department of Columbia University will participate in the Symposium. Prof. Melman, editor of "Inspection for Disarmament,"' and author of "The Peace Race" will present his argument for a United States policy to end the arms race. The final speaker will be Her- man Kahn. Kahn, formerly ar military strategist with the Rand Corporation, currently working with the Hudson Institute, will present a talk entitled "Deterrence and Defense in the '60's and '70's." In UGLI Each of the programs in the Voice Symposium will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of the UGLI. Voice concluded its fund-raising campaign for the Southern Stu- dent Fredeom Fund yesterday. The four hundred dollars collected inl the campaign will be sent to the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in Atlanta to be used for support of civil rights projects in the South ! ,c... ll 444444":ti:?{ f° 7 2?:?.rs?!,..
