BEATS BRAVES, 3-0:

Holtzman hurls no-hitter

For Direct Classified Ad Service. Phone 764-0557
Monday through Friday, 10:00 to 3:00

CHICAGO 0P) -Ken Holtzman
fired the fifth no-run, 'no-hit
game of the 1969 season and the
first by a Chicago Cubs' pitcher
in nine years in a 3-0 victory over
the Atlanta Braves yesterday.
Holtzman permitted only three
Braves to reach base, all on walks.
They were Gil Garrido in the
third inning, Bob Didier in the
fifth and Rico Carty in the sev-
enth: Holtman struck out none.
The 23-year-old left-hander
was helped by ,a number of scin-
tillating fielding plays. Twice
Glenn Beckert, the Cubs' second
baseman, made fine stops on
Felipe Alou and threw him out.
In the sixth inning, shortstop Don
Kessinger made a good play on
Phil Niekro and retired the
Braves' starting pitcher.
In the seventh, .left fielder Billy
Williams' backed to the wall and
leaped high to grab a long drive
off the bat of Hank Aaron. In the
eighth, Beckert made another ex-
cellent play and retired Didier.
In the ninth inning, Holtzman
retired Alou on a pop fly to Kes-
singer, Millan on a grounder to
third baseman Santo and Aaron
on a grounder to Becker on a 3-2
pitch.
"I just stood out there and chal-
lenged them with my fast ball-I
wasn't going to take a chance
with any curves," said Holtzman
.after the game.
It was Holtzman's first no-hit-
ter but. he said, he wasn't espec-
ially excited until it was all over.
"I've nearly made the trip twice
before," he explained. "I went into
the ninth against the Dodgers in
1966 only to , have a no-hitter
spoiled. And earlier this season
I had a no-hitter for seven in-
nings against the Cardinals and
lost the game."
"About the sixth inning I
thought I was running out of gas
and when I ;got to the dugout I
asked Coach Pete Reiser to watch
me out there-to check my speed
and see if I was losing any.
"Well, I went back out and I
never heard anything from Re-
iser, so I just kept throwing fast
balls."
The Cubs, leading the National
League's East Division, wrapped
up the game in the opening in-
ning on Ron Santo's three-run
homer.
Kessinger opened the frame
with an infield single and Beck-
ert's single sent him to third. Wil-
liams struck out,\but Santo fol-
lowed with his 25th homer. It

The last previous time a no-
hit game was pitched against the
Braves was on June 18, 1967 by
the Astros' Wilson.
Holtzman, who was signed for
a $65,000 bonus in 1965, is in his
fourth season with the Cubs. He
spent most of the 1967 campaign
in military service after he had
recorded a 9-0 record in the sea-
son's first six weeks. His record
in 1968 was 11-14.

To the editor:
Allow me to add my endorsement
to one of the four landlords you cited
in your article on the problem of
student rents.
Mr. Dennis Dahlmann was my land-
lord last year, and now I wish he
were. again this year. I found him
fair and equitable in every way. The
association with him and his staff
was most enjoyable.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (')--Drivers
who compete on the South's stock
car tracks have hired an attorney
and formed their own association,
to be known as the Professional
Drivers Association (PDA) to take
a more active role in future di-
rection of the sport.
Richard Petty, the all-time
money winner in the National As-
tociation for Stock Car Auto
Racing NASCAR, was elected pres-
ident.
Petty said the group's immediate
aims wil be directed at these
areas:
-Long term fringe benefits for
drivers,;
-Improvement in working con-
ditions at tracks.
-Better financial returns.
Reached at Pell City, Ala.,
NASCAR President William H. G.
France said the movement was
news to him.
"We're not planning to change
NASCAR," he said. "We'll post our
prize money and they're welcome
to run if they want to. If not,
that's their business. There are no
contracts with NASCAR."

MACON, Ga. ()-The city coun-
cil last night refused to rent
Macon's 9,000-seat coliseum to
former world heavyweight cham-
pion Muhammed Ali for a boxing
match this fall.
Mayor Ronnie Thompson told
aldermen that Ali's promoters
had contacted coliseum manageri
Bill Lavery and asked to rent the
building for a fight.
"This man has refused to fight
for his country but he wants to
fight for the dollar under a free

enterprise system that other
Americans, both black and white
are fighting and dying to pre-
serve," said Thompson.
"I would prefer that he not
come to Macon."
Ali, a Black Muslim minister,
was stripped of his title after re-
fusing to be inducted into the
Army, citing religious objections.
