CCNY looked like a "police state."
At Howard University in Waslh-
ington, D.C., a riot squad of 200
policemen surrounded Cook Hall.
a sophomore dormitory and fired
six tear gas rockets. The students.
mostly black, retaliated with a
barrage of rocks and bottles.
It was estimated that there
were between 180 and 300 stu-
dents in the 1.100 student resi-
dence hall.
After the rock, bottle. and teal
gas melee was over and no arrests
resulted, 100 marshals moved on
to the campus of the federally
endowed institution at 3:30 a.m.
to remove students from six build-
ings, which they had held since
Monday.
President James M. Nabrit Jr.
closed Howard after the sit-in
began.I
The move to clear the buildings
was made after a fire had been
set in a ROTC building. Helmeted7
marshals carrying clubs and wear-
ing gas masks broke down barri-
cades of desks and chairs at the
building doors. When they enter-
ed, the police met no resistance.
Howard officials said ther-e was
"extensive damage, theft and van-
datism."
In a speech last night before3
