WASHINGTON-Diamond Jim
Gentile, for five years one of the
American League's most potent
hitters, was traded yesterday to
the Houston Astros of the Nation-
al League for $100,000 cash and
two players--one a minor league
pitcher and the other a yet-to-be-
named prospect.
A's general manager Hank Pe-
ters told a news conference Gen-
tile was traded to give 23-year-
old Ken Harrelson an opportunity
to play regularly.
The A's in addition to the cash,
got a right-handed pitcher, Jesse
Hickman, 26, now playing at Okla-
homa City in the Pacific Coast
League. Hickman has appeared in
17 games and has a 3-1 record
with an 0.65 earned run average.
In 42 innings, he has registered 63
strikeouts.
NEW YORK - Catcher Elston
Howard was taken off the dis-
abled list by the New York Yan-
kees yesterday.
To make room for the right-
handed slugger, the Yanks sent
outfielder Art Lopez to their To-
ledo farm in the International
League on 24-hour option basis.

NEW YORK (YP)-An executive
of the American -Football League
accused Commissioner Pete Ro-

of throwing up a smoke screen
yesterday to head off AFL ex-

"It's possible Rozelle has gotten
wind of the possibility of the AFL
expanding and is throwing up a
smoke screen to head us off," said
Jack Steadman, general manager
of the Kansas City Chiefs.I
"He hasn't said anything in the-
last year and a half that indi-2
cated the NFL was considering
expansion. In fact, this is the
first time since he has been com-
missioner that I recall he has
made a comment favorable to ex-
pansion."
Words between the two leagues
flowed back and forth yesterday
as competition intensified for pos-
sible future franchises.
The NFL announced it planned
to add two teams, making a total
of 16, by 1967. Commissioner Joe
Foss of the AFL said his league
would jump from eight to 10
teams in 1966 and probably to 12
in 1968.
When asked about reported
plans of the NFL to invade AFL
strongholds -such as Boston and
Houston, Rozelle said: "I have not
given extensive thought to that."
Directors from both leagues, on
the most part, praised plans for
expansion and predicted Approv-
