KANSAS CITY-Rick Monday
hit an inside-the-park homer with
a man on, leading Kansas City to
a 4-2 victory over Detroit and
sending Tiger left-hander Mickey
Lolich to his fifth straight defeat.
Monday connected in the sixth
ining with Campy Campaneris,
who had walked, on bases to snap
a 1-1 tie.
Southpaw Paul Lindblad, a re-
lief ace who was making his first
start, gained his fourth victory
without a loss.
The Athletics scored off Lolich,
now 5-7, in the first inning on
Campaneris' single, a stolen base,
a sacrifice bunt and Mike Herseh-
berger's sacrifice fly.
Detroit scored in the fourth on
consecutive doubles by Jim North-
rup and Bill Freehan in the fourth
inning and in the eighth on Al
Kaline's 11th homer.
Kansas City added a run in the
eighth.
The victory snapped a three-
game losing streak for the A's and
halted the Tigers four-game win-
ning string.

Doubles by Ed Brinkman and
Fred Valentine gave Washington
a run in the first and Bob Saver-
ine's double followed by an infield
out and Cap Peterson's sacrifice
fly pushed another across in the
third.
Ortega struck out six and re-
tired the first nine batters he
faced. But consecutive two-out
singles by Mike Hegan, Mickey
Mantle and Horace Clarke brought
Baldwin on in the eighth. He re-
tired Ruben Amaro ending the
threat.

Cubs T'rim P hill y
PHILADELPHIA - Home runs
by Adolpho Phillips and Billy
Williams backed Ferguson Jenk-
ins' three-hit pitching as the Chi-
cago Cubs trimmed Philadelphia
3-1.
Jenkins, 7-3, struck out nine
and retired the first nine Phillies
he faced before Tony Gonzales
opened the fourth with a homer.
Then Jenkins set down 10 straight
before Rich Allen singled in the
seventh.
Sisk Beats Pirates
PITTSBURGH - Manny Mota's
two-run bloop single and Willie
Stargell's homer backed up Tom-
my Sisk's five-hit pitching as the
Pittsburgh Pirates beat the New
York Mets 3-0.
Mota's single in the second
drove Jose Pagan, who had dou-
bled, and Jerry May, who had
singled.
Stargell hit his 10th homer of
the season and the 100th of his
career in the sixth.
Sisk, 4-3, didn't allow a hit un-
til Cleon Jones beat out an infield
hit with two out in the fifth.
The young right-hander struck
out six in pitching his third com-
plete game in the Pirates' last 36.
No other Pittsburgh pitcher has
gone the route in this span.

CINCINNATI-Willie McCovey
smashed a three-run homer spoil-
ing a 15-strike out performance by
Cincinnati Rookie Gary Nolan and'
then the San Francisco Giants
pushed across a run in the ninth
inning to beat the Reds 4-3.
Nolan, a 19-year-old right-1
hander, fanned Willie Mays four
times but McCovey's two-out shot
in the eighth tied the score and
knocked him out. The .15 strike-
outs were high in the majors this
season.
Then in the ninth, Hal Lanier
opened with a single and moved to
second on a sacrifice. Jim Daven-
prt walked and the runners ad-
vanced on reliever Bob Lee's wild
pitch. The Lanier scampered home
with the winning run on Tom Hal-
ler's high bouncer in front of the
plate.

Nats-Yanks Split
NEW YORK - Rookie Dave
Baldwin shut off a late New York
rally and saved Phil Ortega's vic-
tory as the Washington Senators
defeated the Yankees 2-1 and.
gained a split of their twin-night
doubleheader.
The Yankees scored six runs in
the first two innings of the opener
-two of them on bases-loaded
walks-and Fred Talbot's six-hit-
ter beat the Senators 7-1.
Washington nicked veteran Bill
Monbouquette, making his first
start for the Yankees, for both
their runs and Ortega made them
stand up until the eighth when
three straight singles knocked him
out.
