tistician, BA in soc. sci.~ econ, with gt hte uryhdvoae
stat courses or analysis exper. gatehether Murray had violated
"professional ethics"' and should

sparked the crisis the striking stu-
dents have many other grievances.
Among them are attempts by
Chancellor Dumke to get m o r e
control over student funds, which
they fear would endanger the Ex-
perimental College and other stu-
dent programs; failure of the trus-
tees to approve a badly needed
student union building; and dis-
satisfaction with the progress on
the Black Studies department.
Accordingly, the students have
several demands in addition to re-
hiring Murray including faster
action on the Black Studies de-!

partment, admission of all non-
white students who apply this fall,
replacement of the white financial
aid counselor with a non-white,
no action against those who par- _
ticipate in the strike, and scrap-
ping of Dumke's plan to get con-
trol of student funds.
Most students think the only
things that could stimulate more
mass radical action would be the
expulsion of students involved in
the nonviolent Sproul Hall sit-in
and the militant takeover of Moses
Hall last month.

be fired.
On Oct. 20, Murray stood on a
table in the College dining com-
mons and called for a strike be-
cause the school's new Bl a c k
Studies department had not been
funded or given staff or office
space. He also urged black stu-
dents to carry guns at all times
to protect themselves from white
administrators.
Two days later - and four
days before the election - Glenn
Dumke, chancellor of the Californ-
ia State Colleges, ordered Smith
to suspend Murray. Smith first
asked to meet with Dumke, but
when that request was refused-he
waited until Friday (Nov. 2), af-
ter most students had left for the
weekend, before finally carrying
out the order."
Technically Murray could be re-
instated if the faculty committee
investigating his conduct finds
that he should not be fired. But
most of the striking students be-
lieve the investigation is inteided
to remove Murray and that he will
not be given a fair hearing. It is
also likely that the trustees would
order Murray removed :f the fac-
ulty refused to do so.
The student strike was original-
ly called by the Black Student Un-
ion at San Francisco State. But
it also has support from the Third
World Liberation Front, a coali-
tion of non-white student groups,
and several groups of white stu.-
dents. The student government
has endorsed the strike, along with
SDS and other white radical
groups, the student-run Experi-
mental College, two unions of stu-
dent workers, and the American
Federation of Teachers locally.
Although Murray's suspension
