AACP forced to
reor anize and cut staff
BALTIMORE, MD. - The NAACP - the nation's oldest and
largest civil rights organization - was forced last week to. trim
its staff by ten persons and Executive Director Benjamin
Chavis said further cuts will be made within the next 30 days.
The group faces a 2.7 million deficit.
Under Chavis, group membership has been growing but the
organization was hit this year with a $680,000 court judgment
which it had to pay in cash and its televised Image Awards
program has lost nearly $1.5 million over the last four years.
According to Chavis, "The goal of the reorganization is to
improve our effectiveness and efficiency."
Colin Powell urged
to run as a Republican
WASIDNGTON, D.C. (NBNS) - Some Republican party power
brokers are said to be urging former Joint Chiefs of Staff
Chairman Colin Powell to enter the presidential race as a
Republican. The nation's first Black chairman of the Joint
Chiefs remains unclear about his intentions.
But insiders supposedly want him to enter the race in 1996
as a vice presidential candidate and then be the party's
presidential contender in 2000 or 2004.
Black wealth conference
to focus on several areas
WASlDNGTON D.C. (NBNS) -A series of Black wealth building
conference taking place in cities around the nation this summer
will focus on how African-Americans can build personal and
family wealth. According to organizers, conference topics will
include starting home-based businesses, no-money down. real
estate techniques, selling Black manufactured products, own
ing 900-numbers and forming investment clubs.
The conferences are being sponsored by the n tionally rec
ognized Better Life Club of America. Spokesman James
Nathan explained, "Ours is a how-to conference. No politics. No
rhetoric, Just wealth building projects." Interested persons can

PBS awards $5 million
to minority shows
WASHINGTON, D.C. (NBNS) - The Corporation for Public
Broadcasting last week agreed to establish a $5 million fund
for more minority-oriented programming on public television.
The money is not much by commercial television standards but
it is considered significant for public television. The money
becomes available in the 1996 budget.
Howard president critical
of media, Jewish attacks
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Writing last week, in the New York
Tim ,outgoing Howard University President Franklyn G.
Jenifer denounced recent media characterizations of the pre
dominantly Black university as a "Breeding ground for a new
generation of anti-Semite ." The attack On Howard from media
organizations and Jewish groups came on the heels of a deci
sion to allow controversial Nation of Islam pokesman Khalid
Abdul Muhammad to peak on the campus.
Jewish groups have denounced Muhammad as anti-Jewish.
In his response, Jenifer said that "As a strong believer in free-
p ch" he could not simply ban Muhammad from the campus.
