WABIDNGTON, D.C. - Howard University Pr ident Dr.
Franklyn Jenifer r igned his pas' last week amid controversy
over the university allowing controversial Nation of Islam
spokesman Khalid Abdul Muhammad to speak on the 12,000
tudent campus. However, it appears that Muhammad's ap
pearance did not playa major role in Jenifer' r ignation.
Reports of his leaving had circulated for everal months.
The controversy over the appearance of Muhammad and
other speakers considered anti-Semitic had been stirred by
major Jewish organizations and major stories in the New York
Times and the Washington Post. Howard's board of trustees
had reportedly been dissatisfied with Jenifer for some time.
Howard is widely considered the nation's leading predomi
nantly Black university. Jenifer will now lead the University
of Texas at Dallas.
