Detroit resident Reverend
Eddie K Edwards was honored
with six other area residents for
outstanding volunteerism at the
United Way for Southeastern
Michigan's 27th annual Heart of
Gold A ward luncheon.
In 1976 with five other busi
nessmen he began the Joy of Je
sus, a program providing early
intervention support to inner-
city youth that might follow the
pat of criminal activity. More
than 16,000 adolescents have
been helped through the pro
gram's summer camp and year
round after-school activities.
In 1986, Edwards developed a
revitalization strategy for the
Ravendale community on De
troit's east side. This 38-block
area is becoming a self-sustain
ing and self-gov:erning commu
nity. Ravendale has beoome an
inspiration for other neighbor
hoods. There are 1,500 single
family homes and more than
4,000 residents who are actively

For "Author Day," librarians
visit schools to invite students to
read and report on a elected
number of books, provided by
the library. The titles are chosen
for their literary quality and
their appeal to young adults.
Students who read and write re
ports on the required number of
books also vote for their favorite
author and then are invited to
meet the winning author in per

Thisyear, the winning author
is Joan Lowry Nixon, for her
