In 1976 with five other busi­ nessmen he began the Joy of Je­ sus, a program providing early intervention support to inner-­ city youth that might follow the pat of criminal activity. More than 16,000 adolescents have been helped through the pro­ gram's summer camp and year­ round after-school activities. In 1986, Edwards developed a revitalization strategy for the Ravendale community on De­ troit's east side. This 38-block area is becoming a self-sustain­ ing and self-gov:erning commu­ nity. Ravendale has beoome an inspiration for other neighbor­ hoods. There are 1,500 single family homes and more than 4,000 residents who are actively involved and 'Working toward positive change. The goal of" Author Day" is to encourage recreational reading among children in grades seven, eight and nine, and to develop in them the habit of using the li­ brary.
