make you forget all about
Mariah Carey's "Dream
Lover" simply because it has
much more grit and jam p0-

gle, "Why Can't Lovers" takes
what Madonna tried to do
with "Justify My Love" (the
monologue on top of a thump
ing bass) and does it right.
Absent of the graphic sex Ma
donna included, Lisa Lisa
chronicles the cycle of a rela
tionship. Going from intro
duction to watching "the late
late late show" alone, "Why
Can't Lovers" is evidence of
the fact that after a decade
long career, Lisa Lisa has fi
nally grown up.

FINALLY, THE IMAGE
of the cute little girl sur
rounded by a group of big
strong men seemingly in con
trol is gone. Lisa Lisa has
emerged as a woman of her
own, packed with enough tal
ent and funkiness to make us
forget her stint in the cotton
candy funk business.
These two singles also in
clude a "girlfriend" kind of
feel to it. The beginning of
"Why Can't Lovers" is a sce
nario of ' Lisa and her friend
hanging out when they spot
Lisa's old boyfriend. "Please
don't let him come over her," ,
Lisa sighs. "what happened?"
her friends inquire. Thus be
gins the journey into Lisa
personal monologue.
