Skiers (NBS) iII hold i 1994
Mini Summit, Annual M ting
Challenge Cup (AMCC) at Cop­
per Mountain, Colorado. The
event follows the organizations
2_9th anniversary Summit held
at Vail, Colorado in January
1993, Over 2,000 NBS members
are expected to attend the Mini­
Summit at Copper Mountain.
The NBS is a non-profit, pre­
dominately African American
organization with a member­
ship of over 14,000. The NBS is
the largest ski club in the nited
States and has been in existence
for over 20 years. The Jim
Dandy Ski Club of Detroit,
Michigan recently celebrated its
35th anniversary as did the Chi­
cago Ski Twisters, On the West
coast the Winter Fox Ski Club
: celebrated their 15th anniver­
: sary .
. • The National Brotherhood of
: Skiers was founded by Art Clay
• of Chicago, Illinois and Ben Fin-
• ley of Los Angeles California.
. The first "Black Summit" ski
gathering took place in Aspen,
Colorado in 1973. The purpose of
the organization is to encourage
and support minority youth in
quest of membership on the
United States Ski Team. In ad­
dition the NBS hopes to promote
winter sports among African
Americans.
At present the NBS supports,
and provides financial assis­
tance to over 25 African Ameri­
can youth who are members of
the NBS A & B national racing
teams. In addition to these
scholarships, the NBS supports
4 regional programs providing
training to over 1,000 young Af­
rican American skiers throu h­
out the United States as a part
of the NBS youth developmen
program.

level , beginning with the novice
first time skier, are given a soul­
ful and warm welcome introduc­
tion to skiing. The 81 clubs
compete for honors with the
, NBS "Challenge Cup" awarded
to the club with the best overall
combined race results in alpine
and nordic skiing.
Individual awards go to those
competing in "NASTAR" format
races. Many of the activiti are
sponsored by long time upport-,
ers such as Anheuser-Busch
Brewery and the Sterling Win­
throp Drug Company.

of the recognizable names who

porters of the organization
through the years.
IN ADDITIO TO the ski­
ing schedule there are many so­
cial events for both the skier and
non-skier. Off slope entertain­
ment will feature GRP recording
artist George Howard, a re­
nowned jazz saxophonist. Also
appearing will be vocalist Ger­
ald Alston who records on 'the
, Motown label.
