IDGHLAND PARK-After some
qu tioning by critics during the
Mayo Night ion before the
October 4 City Council meeting,
Highland park Mayor Linsey Por
terstated that he was going to hire
a non-resident as Director of the
Public Safety Department, to re
place John Maddox, who is retir
ing after SO years of service on the
Force.
Aeeordingto the charter, before
the Public Safety Director can be
appointed, the Mayor's choice,
must be approved by the City
Council. Porter admitted that
during his campaign against for
mer Mayor Martha 800tt he criti
cized her for appointing an officer
from Detroit, and campaigned
that he himself would always hire
a resident.
Porter said that when he made
such statements, he was looking
at the situation from the perspec
tive ofa city council member, but
now as Mayor, he has a greater
understanding of the situation in
- too Public Safety Department.
"I know what is going on in
public safety day in and day out, "
he said, stating that even council
members are not aware of the full
situation.

lDGlll..AND PARK - During the Mayor's
Night session of the Monday, October 4 City
Council meeting, Highland Park Mayor Linsey
Porter declared, "Things are getting better. You
can see the alleys are getting a lot cleaner. W
Porter was answering' critics of his program
to privatize garbage collection and remove city
workers.
Iris Edwards, manager of the Farrand Par
Apartments has different ideas. On the day of
the meeting she photographed an overflowing
garbage can to demonstrate conditions in her
area.
Lee Edwards, her husband, said the private
rompany the city chose did not collect the gar
bage for three weeks and garbage was piling
high on some of the floors, because they could
not put it outside.
After calls to the .private rompany, he said,
garbage collectors came and took away the gar
bage, but only out of one of the two cans the
apartment was given by the city. ,
The apartment is supposed to get three cans,
but the city has not given them the third oneyet.
