The maximum sentence set
by the Legislature for second de

term of the years." In a second
degree murder case, the judge
can either give a life sentence, or
set both a maximum and a mini
mum term.
If an offender is given a life
sentence, they are eligible for pa
role, but must be sent to prison.
Second degree murd rs are not .
eligible for probation.
According to a report in the
Detroit News, the average sen
tence given by Judge Crockett
for second degree murder is 19.2
years.
