A. M probably t the culprit here
is the lack of everyd y use you
described. However, freeing sticking
drawers which travel on wooden
guides is fixable.
First, forcibly remove the drawers
and check the top edges for any
scraped or shiny areas. Sand those
pots with a heavy-grit sandpaper
and test the condition of the drawers'
operation at this point. If more sand
ing is needed, the do so P

ease. Next, appty ordin4ry soap or
paraffin to the tops and bottoms 'of
the drawers. You should have long
lasting, trouble-free use of your anti
que for a good while.
Q. I live in a Iplit level. The
ment area h a stale odor. It's not
unple t, but it's very notice
able.1s there anythinll can buy to
combat this problem? I can live
with it, but a solution ould make
breathial a tittle easier. We do
keep the dows closed, because
tile damp cau molcltoll'Ow.
Also, tbe room is cloeecl up almost
100 percent of the time. Jryou have
any SUI estions, plea e let me
know.
A. The geographical area ii, which
you live can play havoc in ref erenee
to the type of indoor condition your
basement is generating. Also, the ex
isting building material , leaks from
your foundation, and even home fur-
- nishings playa big part.
Judging from your explanation, the
room doesn 't seem to be used very
often, if at all. I can't guess how old
your house is, but there are ways to
control most of the stale odors. You
can try using a dehumidifier in that
particular room. Also, do leave the
door open to allow more ventilation
and a better exchange of circulating
air. Installing a small oscillating fan
somewhere near the dehumidifier
can help you attain a better air
quality. If there aren't ny other 0b
vious signs that m y cause this stale
ness, then this procedure may just be
the answer.
Q.I have panelial on my walls in
the tamily room. I would either
like to paint or, wallpaper the
. ails, but I don't koo hat to do,
or if it can be done. There is DO all
behind the panelinl except th
2x4' • I don't want to take the
paneUnl own it I don't have to.
Can you &ive me aay advice?
A. If your choice leans toward
painting the paneling, it would be
wise not to concede to that decision.
However, your next choice is to hang
wallpaper.
There are some small preparations
to take before you actually install
your wallpaper. You must be sure the
surface of your wall paneling i free
of din, dust and grease. Also, lightly
scuff the surface of your paneling if
it bas a high gloss texture. Make sure
the entire urfece i absolutely clean
before you apply the wallpaper d
hesive. Work lowly, but efficiently,
and I'm sure the end result will be
satisfactory .
