RUNAWAY
continued from 81
"Party Groove" exploded. They
then scored a recording deal with
London/Payday/PLG. -
Layered at Jazzy Jay Studios
in the Bronx and mixed at Power
Play in Queens, Runaway Slave
emerges as intriguing Nubian
noize. "Making music is about
being creative, It says Showbiz.
"What I do is take found sounds
and transform them into my own
music. I've always dug big-band
music, which ensures that you
can always swing or bounce to
what I do. I transform that style
into hip-hop."
Runaway Slaves proves that
the brilliance of "Soul Clap" was
no fluke. Amid dope and dusty
grooves, are some of the smartest
rhymes about ghetto reality and
the world of the B-Boy (hangin'
under street lights, drinking 40s,
smoking blunts and flexing, play
ing for keeps, getting laid and
staying paid). The little track
snaps a sharp aural portrait of the
urban landscape: "Livin' in da
slums with the bums/The rats and
the stray cat , dogs with the
rabies, little babies havin'
babies/Juveniles act wild/Every
footstep you take on the corner
there's a crack vile."
rhyme story ("I lost it but I
bounced back," he raps. Later it's
"Instead of a package I wanted a
mike and a track").
The only difference between
Showbiz & A.G.'s life then and
now is there's no need for a hustle
and there are better financial
rewards. The pair still enjoy
hangin' with cronies ("Don't run
wit' the bourgeois/My crew's
much Blacker"), hunting for
sweet beats ("Yeah, we still dig
gin in the crates") and dreaming
of huge payoffs ("I'm tryin' to
make a million-dollars - some
thing I never saw before," Show
biz rhymes on the album's first
single, "Fat Pocketsry.
So Showbiz,& A.G. are rollin'
steady on a road to riches. Ul
timately, though, this road will
continue to bring them back to the
place that inspired their unique
world view and original form of
musical expression in the first
place.
Me REN continued from 81
ments. That s like being
somebody's boy."
"Hound Dogz" is for
everybody that's out there acting
funny. "The girls from high
school that only wanted to talk to
the high rollers, now they come
upto me and ask, 'What you been
up to?" 'Ren uses some 01' Par-
liament and introduces a new dog
howling.
"This EP is for everybody that
stuffed their mouth with tissue (8
la Marlon Brandon in "The God
father" perpetrating to be a
gangster) - Kizz My Black Au,
'cauz M.e. Ren is the final fron
tier. "
JUSTICE
continued from BS
left unabated, the future holds llttle
hope for our survival. Relegating
pollution to minority communities is
a failed policy as well as unlawful
discrimination.
The environment we all share -
our air, water and land - is the very
e ence of life irrespective of race or
color. Ultimately, the fight against
environmental raci m is a struggle
waged on behalf of us al' .
education, legislation and litigation.
The crew's lyrics attempt to
break the chain of inner-city op
pression by addressing alterna
tive to Black-on-Black violence,
welfare, petty jealousy, distrust,
and illegal enterprise.

A.G. exposes his own crime-to-
