HIGHLAND PARK
By RON SEIGEL
HIGHlAND PARK - The Highland
Par School Board has authorized
Eldon Martin, uperintendent of K·
12, to ume dministrative respon
sibilities for Highland Par
Community College.
A ource stated that one reason for
the appointment w the desire to
monitor Dr. Charles Mitchell, HPCC
presid nt.
Dr. Mitchell received a even per
cent salary increase the board did not
approve earlier this year. He denied
he authorized it, but doubts were ex
pre ed by some members of. the
board, including John Holloway, who
was then board president.
The source also said Mitchell
sought reimbursement for expenses
that the board did not consider proper.
Accusing Mitch 11 of frequent ab
senteeism, the ource said Martin
would administer the college during,
ELDON MARTIN
Mitchell's absences.
Provisions in Mitchell's contract,
which the source called "too loose,"
prevented the board from firing him.
The Citizen could not reach Dr.
Mitchell for a reply by the time of this
deadline.

Although high blood pressure affts all age groups, it is mo t com
monly seen in the elderly, especially black elderly. There are many
potentially harmful effects of high blood pre ure, including heart attack,
loss of vision, stroke, and lo s of kidney function. Therefore, it is wise for
everyone to have hi or her blood pre sure checked periodically. Also it is
advi able to eliminate or modify factors that increase the blood pres ure.
One uch factor is stre .
Dr. David Nash, Clinical Professor of Medicine at State University of
New York Health Science Center has tudied the effect of stress on blood
pres ure. According to Dr. Nash, writinl in a recent i sue of Pharmacy
Times, the role of tress and I)igh blood pres ure in person who previously
had normal blood pre sure is no fully understood. However, research has
hown that persons with tres ful jobs, uch as air traffic controllers,
experience more high blood pre ure than do other groups. Dr. Nub call
this condition "hyperkinetic hypertension."
Eliminating ri k factor. such u motin and obe ity in the hyperki
netic hyperten ive person may help control blood pre ure. Exercise,
relaxation, and biofeedback may help also. Prescription medicines uch as
beta blockers ACE inhibitor ,and calcium blockers may btneedod if noo
drug appro he are not effective.
