awards in his career which sp�ns
three decades.
His ability to mix classical and
contemporary styles with gospel is
unmatched. Whitfield played for the
pope, has been presented with the
�ey to the city of Cleveland, Ohio,
and performed with Reverend Jesse
Jackson and Aretha Franklin at the
Southern Christian Leadership Con-
ference.
Thomas' last release, "My Faith"
was honored with a Stellar and
.Grammy nomination and he was
presented a Vision Award by
SCORE Magazine and Bobby Jone
Gospel explosion for his contribu
tions to the music industry.
At the time of press the Michigan Citizen learned of the
untimely death of Minister Thomas Whitfield. Whitfield died
Sunday of a heart attack.

heritage of Black gospel music
should not go to waste by unskilled

Sometimes, it can be kind of ticky but it

The African Methodist
Epi copal Church will hold it's
44th General Conference in
Orlando, Florida, July 7 - 18,
1992.
The AME General Conference
I' i held every four years and brings
together representatives from 19
districts throughout America, the .
Bahamas, the Virgin Islands and
Africa.
More than 25,000 people are
expected to attend the
Conference.
Delegates, their families and
other Conference participants
will occupy more than 25 hotels
in the Orlando area. The Clarion
Hotel will serve as Conference
headquarters.
This Conference will being
together one of the largest :
gatherings of people of African
descent to consider development
of programs to enhance the lives
of humankind throughout the
world.
A PRIMARY MISSION of
the African Methodist Episcopal
Church i the development of the
whole person. To -carry out this
mission, the 4�th Annual
Conference will adopt plans for
educational outreach, protest and
effective stewardship. Through
these programs, the AME Church
serves as vocal advocate for
people of African descent around
the world, organizers ay.
Delegates to the General
Conference will elect and assign
leaders responsible for the
administration and. promotion of
the programs of the AME Church.
Leadership positions to be
elected during the 44th General
Conference include Bi hops,
General Officell, membeD of the
General Board, Judicial Council
member , and members of
various commi sion and
committees.
During the General
Conference the AMB Church will
consider laws and amendments,
regarding the governlna of its
members. Tbe general program
emphases and f1nancial budget of
the Church will be adopted for the
next four years.
